D he halftime in the 2016 Formula 1 season is almost over. The first interim reports will be drawn up before the summer break. A look at the table of laps and defects shows that the fastest car is also the most reliable. Mercedes had one defect to complain about in the race. All technical mishaps happened during training.

Nevertheless, Mercedes is not in first place on the laps covered. The weak point was in the cockpit. Without the collision between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton on the first lap of the Spanish GP, Mercedes would have covered the maximum distance of 1,354 laps. So exactly the 132 laps of Barcelona are missing. That means only 4th place behind Williams, Red Bull and Force India.

A flat tire on the 27th lap knocks out the race. Then there was the engine failure in the formation lap of Bahrain. Kimi Raikkonen suffered early failures in Melbourne (turbocharger) and Monte Carlo (accident).

Only Renault is worse. The revitalized works team is at the bottom with 1,092 laps, 4 defects and 2 accidents. The previous one wasn't better either. Lotus was also at the bottom of the table in 2015.

McLaren-Honda has improved significantly. With 1,149 laps, the proud racing team from Woking is in the middle of the field. However, the failure rate is still relatively high with 6 defects. There were 13 in the 2013 season. The technical problems do not only affect the engine. McLaren crashed twice because of the transmission and once each with problems with the brakes, the battery, the motor and the electronics.
