S ebastian Vettel actually had no chance. After the planned engine change, the German only started the race in Austin from 13th on the grid. But as soon as the lights of the starting lights went out, the Ferrari driver started like the fire department. After just one lap he found himself in 7th place. By the second pit stop on lap 27, he had already moved up to 4th position.

With fresh tires, he really attacked after the restart of the safety car phase. On lap 34 he was only a few seconds behind the two Mercedes. And unlike Vettel, they had to pit again. A tire change at Rennspeed would have taken Vettel to the top. But then Rosberg and Hamilton came to the aid of a virtual and a real safety car phase, in which the silver files could turn to the pits without losing much time.

Vettel complains about safety car bad luck

'I think our strategy was the right one, especially when you consider where we started', the Heppenheimer analyzed afterwards. 'We wanted to keep our chances for the title alive as long as possible. When the second safety car came, that chance was unfortunately gone. It's a shame to lose like this in the end. But I think we all had it in such a chaotic race sometimes more sometimes less luck with the timing. '

In the end, Vettel rolled over the line, only half a second behind Rosberg. 'When you get onto the podium from 13th place, that's actually pretty good. But it doesn't feel like that,' the Heppenheimer shrugged his shoulders. 'I think back a lot to the season and where we could have done something better. I would have loved to keep the World Cup open longer and ideally turned around in Abu Dhabi.'

Vettel did not want Hamilton that Steal the spotlight. 'Today is Lewis' day. I want to congratulate him. I know the feeling he has now. It's always a great relief when you've finally made it.'

Declaration of war to Mercedes

But the four-time champion didn't want to just mop up. Vettel gave a small challenge to the silver competition: 'Overall we have to be satisfied. The car worked very well again today. We exceeded expectations this year. And we want to be even better next year. Everything looks good. The goal is to win the title with FerrariFactory are hungry. '
