H ispania is a racing team with Spanish roots. Pedro de la Rosa's commitment was obvious. But the 40-year-old Spaniard was not on the bill for any of the drivers who are still looking for a cockpit for 2012. He is blocking a seat at Hispania that might otherwise have been reserved for a young driver. For example a Red Bull Junior.

This year Red Bull placed Daniel Ricciardo with the Spanish racing team with an agreeable dowry. So that the Australian can gain racing experience. There was no place for him on the Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso.

Ricciardo's training is now complete. The man from Perth passed it with flying colors. Despite being thrown into the deep end of the season, he quickly gained the upper hand against Vitantonio Liuzzi. Ricciardo was usually faster in training recently. In the race anyway. At Toro Rosso, one of the two cockpits wobbles. The question is: who has to go, Sebastien Buemi or Jaime Alguersuari? The decision will only be made after the season.

Vergne is pushing into Formula 1

Red Bull now has another young driver in the form of Jean-Eric Vergne. The 21-year-old Frenchman gave a taste of his skills at the junior test drives in Abu Dhabi on the Red Bull. Three days, three best times.

Afterwards, Vergne cheekily claimed in an interview with a French newspaper: 'I already feel ready for Red Bull.' What Mark Webber can do, he can too. Forget forgetting that his colleague Ricciardo also set the best time every day last year. Obviously, that's nothing special in a Red Bull.

Where does Red Bull park its juniors?

One thing is clear: Red Bull will give the French a cockpit next year. The Ricciardo model at Hispania has proven itself. But if the bottom of the class from Valencia no longer has a cockpit on offer, another alternative is needed. Lotus, which will be called Caterham in the coming year, is an obvious choice.

The contract extension of Jarno Trulli announced in Monza is apparently not worth the paper it is on. Lotus would be the ideal training place for Vergne. A team that is about to jump into midfield, which with Heikki Kovalainen can offer a real touchstone as a teammate, who drives Renault engines like Red Bull and will purchase gearboxes and KERS from Red Bull next year.

Lotus as a last resort for Sutil and Barrichello

This variant would be bad news for Adrian Sutil and Rubens Barrichello. If the doors close on Williams and Renault, Lotus is the last possible option. But a few million from Red Bull in exchange for a young driver probably counts more than the experience that Sutil and Barrichello have to throw in the scales.

Barrichello apparently has a bad premonition. In an interview with a daily newspaper from Sao Paulo, the Brazilian indicated that his farewell performance could take place on Sunday.
