D he weather god was gracious. In the first training session, the dry tires stayed in the box. In the second the asphalt temperature did not climb above 25 degrees. So it was neither too hot nor too cold for the two types of rubber on offer. For the first time, Bridgestone brought the two extremes to a racetrack: super soft and hard.

The teams feared a second Montreal or worse. The soft tire would be clearly faster, but lose grip dramatically after one lap. The hard one could be hard to get up to temperature. 'The weather decides which of the two tire types will be the more critical,' prophesied Bridgestone tire boss Hirohide Hamashima.

Tire problem not as bad as expected

Everything turned out very differently. 'The tires are much less of a problem than we all feared. If anything, there could be difficulties getting the hard tires up to temperature,' explained Nico Rosberg after 180 minutes of practice.

The biggest problem is uncertainty. The drivers only had the opportunity to test the dry tires in the second training session. And there was no consistent picture. 'For us the soft tires were almost a second faster,' said Timo Glock.

The Sauber drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Pedro de la Rosa were satisfied with their endurance runs and their fastest lap, but criticized: 'We only win two tenths with the soft tires. With others it is over half a second. '

No clear findings

Even Fernando Alonso, the fastest in training, could not make any clear statements. 'There are no clear indications as to how much which tire degrades. The weather was too inconsistent for that. Luckily we're all in the same boat. It doesn't look as bad as in Montreal, but that can be deceiving We therefore lack information for the race strategy. We will have to rely on our gut instinct. '

Adrian Sutil could not make any precise statements either:' Today the soft tire lasted maybe seven laps. It is questionable whether it will be better tomorrow. The track will still be very green in the morning. ' The choice of tires plays a decisive role in qualifying. From tenth place, the drivers can choose their own tires in the race. 'I think everyone will be soft in Q3drive because they are simply faster. But it can be that in the end eleventh place is better than eighth. '
