S o slowly the test drives are coming in Momentum. On Thursday (March 3rd, 2016) the teams had the penultimate opportunity to try out the 2016 technology. In the morning, tests were even carried out for 2017. Kimi Räikkönen dared to take the new 'halo', which is supposed to improve safety in the cockpit, for the first time.

But even after the Iceman had thrown off the misshapen handle, Ferrari remained the focus of interest. Shortly before lunch, the Scuderia completed a qualifying simulation with the softer types of tire. On the stickiest mixture 'ultra-soft', Raikkonen finally managed a lap in 1: 22.765 minutes - no other driver on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was so fast this test winter.

Williams best time on soft tires

Williams also took some fuel from the tank and tried soft rubbers. Because Felipe Massa was held up on his attempt with the new ultra softs, the time on the 2 levels harder softs was the best lap in the evaluation. It was around four-tenths slower than Raikkonen's specification.

The difference between the softest Pirelli varieties was not as great as last week because of the cooler temperatures. As usual in such conditions, the fastest rubbers quickly start to grain and lose grip.

Nico Hülkenberg was also on the hunt for times on his last appearance this winter. On ultra-soft he made the third fastest lap just behind Massa. Max Verstappen also tried the extremely soft mixture from the Pirelli range. The Dutchman recorded the sixth fastest time, 6 tenths behind.

Ferrari closer to Mercedes

The rest of the field left the red and purple-marked tires on the shelf and did without on fast laps. Nico Rosberg was the fastest medium driver 1.3 seconds behind the front in 5th position. In the battle between silver and red, we have to note that Raikkonen drove a 1: 23.009 minute time on soft tires in between - and thus 13 thousandths faster than Rosberg in his soft best time on Tuesday. Even if the times should not be overestimated, Ferrari seems to have taken a step in the direction of the Silver Arrows.

The reliability also seems to fit Ferrari.Raikkonen drove a total of 136 laps - including a complete race distance in the afternoon. Force India, Toro Rosso, Renault and Sauber also completed the standard endurance exercise without any noticeable problems. In contrast, Mercedes did without a Grand Prix simulation. The world championship team wanted to save a set of tires for the program at the finals on Friday.

Problems at Haas and Manor

Pascal Wehrlein completed his last test unit in the Manor on Thursday . However, the DTM champion was held up by problems. The electrics and hydraulics alternately played a trick on the newcomer, so that in the end only 48 laps were combined. Shortly before the end, Wehrlein went out again with ultra-soft tires and drove his personal best lap, which was enough for 8th place.

Also at Haas F1 again, not much came together. Romain Grosjean struggled with braking problems in the morning. Shortly after the lunch break, the Frenchman slipped into the gravel trap at the end of the home straight. The team did not want to give the reason for the departure yet. Grosjean only continued after a two and a half hour break. With just 78 laps, it was Haas' third day with lean food in a row.
