D the Lotus-Renault drama is finally over. The French carmaker officially confirmed the buyback of the Formula 1 team on December 3, 2015. In the period that followed, only the last details had to be clarified between the parties. On December 21, Renault announced in a press release the final takeover, which, according to the French, had taken place on the previous Friday. The team from Enstone drove as a Renault works team in the premier class from 2002 to 2009.

After 6 years under the name Lotus F1 Team, we are now returning to the old status. Renault does not want to announce the new team name, future management structures, team partners and other details until an event in February. Until then, Renault Marketing Director Jérôme Stoll as Chairman and Cyril Abiteboul as Sports Director (as before) will lead the transition phase.

Renault-Remaining on the dump for a long time

'Renault had 2 options: Either to come back with 100 percent commitment or to stop entirely, 'said Renault boss Carlos Ghosn on December 3rd. 'After a close examination, I decided that we would stay in Formula 1. The last details that were discussed with the Formula 1 managers gave us confidence for this challenge.'

With these 'Details' meant Ghosn of course financial commitments. Renault representatives had negotiated the status of the team and possible special bonuses with Bernie Ecclestone over the entire Abu Dhabi weekend. For a long time, the Renault comeback had been on the brink. Only one last offer shortly before the season finale on Sunday set the pendulum in the direction of Formula 1 stay.

With the official confirmation of the stay in Formula 1, not only the 450 employees in the factory in Enstone fall a stone from the heart. Red Bull and Toro Rosso also received the news with relief. Red Bull will continue to drive with Renault engines - albeit under a different name. Toro Rosso will get 2015 Ferrari aggregates next season.

Renault F1 Team wants to get back to the top

Ghosn was already spitting on the takeover announcement: 'Our goal is to win - even if that will take some time ', so the challenge. The last world championship titles of the works team date from 2005 and 2006, won by Fernando Alonso. The last Grand Prix win was in 2008retracted. Incidentally, the new car should have the traditional yellow Renault look again.

With the takeover, Lotus is finally getting out of its financial difficulties. Recently, the engineers and mechanics were repeatedly hindered in their daily work because invoices were not paid. Now all debts have probably been paid off. The budget doesn't have to hide from the other top teams. The development program for 2016 - in terms of both engine and chassis - is ambitious. 'The technical team is making good progress to have the car ready for the test drives in Barcelona at the end of February 2016,' said the last statement.
