S at the race weekend in Monza rumors had been growing that Kimi Raikkonen will no longer drive for Ferrari in the coming season. Still under the old Ferrari President Sergio Marchionne, the youngster Charles Leclerc had signed a contract that guaranteed him the coveted regular place next to Sebastian Vettel.

The only question was how Ferrari can say goodbye to its 2007 world champion. The question was answered on Tuesday (September 11th, 2018): 'Scuderia Ferrari announces that Kimi Räikkönen will step down from his current position at the end of the 2018 season,' says an official press release signed by team boss Maurizio Arrivabene.

The 'Iceman' can look back on an impressive career. He is currently at 285 starts in the premier class. Only Barrichello, Schumacher, Button and Alonso have more. Even with the number of wins (20), podium places (100) and fastest race laps (46), the 38-year-old from Espoo is way up in the rankings.

It will not be for his successor Charles Leclerc be easy to follow in the big footsteps. And Sebastian Vettel will also have to get used to it first. With Raikkonen, he always had a reliable teammate who loyally stood by the Heppenheimer in the four years together without tricks or political games. In return, Vettel was always one of the great advocates when it came to contract extensions. But now Vettel couldn't help either.

In our photo show we show the highlights from Kimi Räikkönen's career.
