Power Ranking Spanish GP 2022: Mercedes visit

Spanish GP 2022

The Barcelona Upgrade Festival didn't change much in terms of the order in the field, but it did change the distances and prospects. Mercedes has moved closer to Red Bull and Ferrari. Alfa Romeo and McLaren neutralized themselves.

Before the Spanish GP, the prophets set the mood: The season starts again in Barcelona. The biggest upgrade so far this season has hardly led to any shifts in the field, but it still left its mark.

The balance of power could change soon. Many of the modified cars were still too new. However, their debut indicated that the field will be pushed together and could be mixed up in the next races.

Ferrari is one step ahead of Red Bull again. The upgrade made an impact. Red Bull only remains in the lead because they brought both cars to the finish line and Ferrari gave away a win with an engine failure.

Lesson with the B version

Mercedes has reduced the gap to the top from one second to three tenths. Everyone is now hoping for a quick merger. If three teams compete for victory with very different cars, Formula 1 would be another highlight.

Behind the top trio, Alfa Romeo consolidated its role as the leader in the midfield. The upgrade has even given the Confederates a little breathing room. Despite technical problems, the engineers got it up and running faster than McLaren got its expansion stage. Team boss Andreas Seidl promised that there is much more to the package.

Alpine brought comparatively modest changes and seemed to be punished for it on Saturday. But finally the engineers had given preference to a good racing setup. This is how the French racing team keeps ahead of the again pale Alpha Tauri and the Haas, who distributed their form in the opposite direction to Alpine. Strong on Saturday, weak on Sunday. Aston Martin has yet to teach its B version to walk. However, the free training sessions already indicated that there is more hidden than the result says.
