F errari makes it easy for Mercedes to win. Mercedes has surely grown since the summer break. The Spec3 engine has more power, the chassis has been further improved in three steps. Engineers have learned to understand their F1W09 and the tires.

But it is also true that Ferrari does not use the potential of its package. The engine advantage has mysteriously disappeared. And in Suzuka you lost a surprising amount of time in the fast corners. It looked very different at Silverstone.

Ferrari suddenly has a problem protecting its rear tires. It often takes three training sessions until the coordination is reasonably correct. For the qualification ride over one lap, it is usually a bad compromise. In Suzuka, Ferrari was a good three tenths missing from Mercedes.

Ferrari racing space at Mercedes level

In the race things will look better again. Despite the damage to his car, Sebastian Vettel had less trouble keeping the tires in good condition than Valtteri Bottas, for example. The foundation stone for the defeat was once again laid on Saturday. The wrong tire choice in Q3 banished the Ferrari drivers to starting positions 4 and 8 and forced them to take high risks on Sunday. Both got stuck with Max Verstappen.

Verstappen's Red Bull was also damaged in the collisions with the Ferrari drivers. Despite the loss of 20 downforce points, Verstappen was as fast as Bottas. The same applies to Vettel. So in retrospect you have to say that Mercedes would have been vulnerable.

But you don't beat a perfectly organized orchestra with accidents and breakdowns. Red Bull would have had a hard time overtaking. The cars were trimmed for too much downforce. Good for the tires, but bad for overtaking a Mercedes. Verstappen caught up with Bottas, but he couldn't get past.
