W hen any race track in the calendar Mercedes favors, then Silverstone . The Silver Arrows have been running like clockwork for the past few years. And Ferrari was mostly off the track on the fast airfield course.
This time Mercedes won the training only thanks to the Hamilton factor. Ferrari fully trusted its risk tactics. With a car on the front row, a better start, flee quickly at the front and then take advantage of the lead when the tires collapse. Without the safety car it would have been tight, but sometimes the able-bodied needs a bit of luck.
Ferrari upgrades work
Ferrari has upgraded massively. The second engine specification wins the duel against Mercedes. “They have more power up and down than we do,” regrets Niki Lauda. Ferrari has also caught up aerodynamically. The new underbody brought more downforce in the fast corners. This is exactly where they had a deficit on Mercedes until now.
Red Bull had no chance at Silverstone. Because there are more and more full throttle curves that lengthen the straights. Even the best chassis cannot compensate for the performance deficit. In an emergency, Red Bull flattened its wings. And lost in the middle-fast corners.
HaasF1 had the fastest car in midfield. The US team should have made the same as in Austria. Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean stood amicably on the fourth row. You are not allowed to drive each other in the car on the first lap. Magnussen scored two points with a damaged car. Too little for this car.
