N after the fuel scandal involving Lewis Hamilton and the sensational pole position Pastor Maldonado had actually thought that the stories from the race could no longer top qualifying. Not even close! Sunday (May 13th) also had some surprises in store.

As in the previous year, the Spanish fans could only cheer briefly at the start. Fernando Alonso took the lead in the first corner, but had to let Pastor Maldonado pass again after the second stop. The Venezuelan drove the race of his life and secured his first Grand Prix victory.

Behind that, too, it was exciting. The two Lotus drivers slept through the first half of the race and in the end could no longer intervene in the battle for victory. Despite changing the front wing and driving through penalty, Sebastian Vettel managed to limit the damage with sixth place and defended the championship lead.

Mercedes was once again bankrupt. In the end, Nico Rosberg slipped to seventh place with degrading tires. For Michael Schumacher it was already over in lap 12 after he had taken Bruno Senna's Williams by the horns. The FIA stewards also received a penalty for Monaco after the race.

Sauber driver Kamui Kobayashi fought his way up to fifth with some remarkable overtaking maneuvers. And Lewis Hamilton plowed from last place on the grid to eight. And as if that weren't enough spectacle, there was an explosion in the Williams garage after the winning photo.

In the photo gallery, all the important events of the day are shown for you in pictures.
