D The fans were looking forward to this day throughout the test winter. Qualifying Saturday in Melbourne should finally clarify what the balance of power looks like this year. For Ferrari there was finally the bitter realization: the new car is too slow. But Red Bull suddenly found itself in the chase role again.

Winners and losers in the photo gallery

In our photo gallery we have all the dramas of the day for you collected in pictures. Fernando Alonso slips into the gravel while trying to beat his Ferrari into Q3. Sebastian Vettel had the same mishap in the third training session. Both cars had to be dug up with the excavator.

On the other hand, there were beaming faces in the McLaren warehouse. Lewis Hamilton on pole position, Jenson Button on the second - a pure first McLaren row was last seen in Valencia 2009. Romain Grosjean was also one of the winners. In his first qualifying on the Melbourne circuit, the Frenchman finished third. Things didn't go so well for Lotus colleague Kimi Räikkönen. The Finn braked himself and was eliminated in Q1.

In our photo gallery we have all the pictures of the route and the best impressions around it.
