L Sebastian Vettel should despair slowly. Whenever it looks like the Heppenheimer has an advantage over Lewis Hamilton, something comes up. In Belgium it was the same as in Budapest four weeks earlier. A small shower at the right time made Lewis Hamilton from the outsider to the favorite on pole position.
The lead was decent at more than seven tenths. A small slip in the penultimate lap also helped the world champion, which enabled him to bring the batteries and tires into the right working window for the decisive shot. So Vettel had to be content with the rear starting position in the first row.
Thanks to the rain god
When the three fastest in qualifying lined up for the mandatory group photo, Hamilton folded his hands. Apparently he knew whom to thank. Once again, a divine coincidence made the pendulum swing in the direction of silver.
But the color pink also celebrated on qualifying Saturday in Spa-Francorchamps. Force India sensationally put both cars on the second row of the grid. Third place should be a satisfaction, especially for Esteban Ocon. The Frenchman is about to be thrown out because new owner Lawrence Stroll wants to accommodate his son. We don't need to mention that Lance Stroll lost his qualifying duel at Williams.
Verstappen fans are sad
The color orange, on the other hand, didn't bring any luck on Saturday. The two McLaren drove way behind in qualifying. Stoffel Vandoorne had his departure in the third training session, at the ValtteriBottas had helped a lot and provided the most spectacular scene of the day early on.
The mood at Oranje was also rather mediocre in the stands. Local hero Max Verstappen, like Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, used the wrong strategy in the rain chaos. The two of them see the starting lights on Sunday from the fourth row.
