As with McLaren and Ferrari, the tailpipes are now hidden in deep shafts that have been embedded in bulges in the bonnet.

Although the tailpipes have to be inclined upwards according to the regulations, the gases are through a clever one Air duct directed downwards towards the diffuser roof. The flow is blown onto an arch and thereby deflected downwards. The physical principle behind the miraculous change of direction is called the Coanda Effect.

After McLaren, Red Bull and Sauber had already presented at the start of the season, most of the other teams followed suit during the first races. Mercedes took an unusually long time with its version of the Coanda exhaust, although the system has clear advantages, especially in terms of traction.

Mercedes is finally following suit with Coanda exhaust

As a reason for the postponement, Brawn stated that they wanted to solve the problem of the unusually high tire wear first, before falsifying the data with new updates. Since the exhaust is aimed right next to the tire, the rubber can be artificially heated by the hot gases. During the first test, therefore, heat sensors were installed on the underbody behind the exhaust.

Mercedes had to reduce the diameter of the tailpipes so that the new exhaust blows where the engineers want the flow to go. Since the V8 engine can no longer breathe freely, this measure costs a bit in terms of performance. The engine experts also have to adjust the settings.

Incidentally, the fact that the FIA ​​has recently stopped allowing major changes to the mappings during the season is not a problem for the works team. Mercedes can also submit the mappings from McLaren or Force India for reference to the commissioners. Both have been using Coanda exhaust systems for a long time.

Second test withTriple DRS

In addition to the new exhaust, Mercedes also tested the new triple DRS again on the afternoon of the first day of testing at Magny Cours. The flow breaks off in three places when the driver presses the DRS button. At the top of the rear wing by flattening the flap. On the front wing, as before, by blowing air under the main element. And then on the lower rear wing element based on the Lotus model.

The new system was already seen on Nico Rosberg's car for the first time during the rainy Friday practice session at Spa. A pipe emerges at the end of the airbox that does not look unlike an exhaust pipe. There, air is bundled and blown onto the lower rear wing element in order to generate more downforce in the center of the wing.

At this point there is usually a zone of low pressure. The wing helps the diffuser to suck out the air. The tube is fed with air that has been attached to the airbox through new additional inlets. If the air flow is disturbed by the DRS activation, the additional downforce and also the air resistance can be reduced.

In addition, a vertical strut with an air duct leads upwards from below to the rear wing. Experts still argue what it does. One theory is that air is blown from below against the main blade in order to stop the flow there too. Others think that the strut will still be connected to the main blade in order to blow the air directly into the lower wing element.

Update to be used in Singapore

Mercedes developed the new parts for the first time with a 60 percent model in the wind tunnel. In the past, the engineers at Brackley only tested on a 50 percent scale. The update package is to be used for the first time in Singapore. It will be interesting to see what will be ready for use by then.
