B ei only For two weeks of testing during the season, the test drives are almost as important for the Formula 1 engineers as the races themselves. The rare opportunities to collect extensive data must be used intensively. And so on Wednesday (May 18, 2016), huge aerodynamic sensors could be seen on almost all cars, which serve to track down the airflow.

The Williams moved in the morning without a measuring grid , but again with the unusual double-decker wing. The day before, Alex Lynn was only allowed to drive the bizarre component at half throttle. Felipe Massa, on the other hand, got the green light to increase the pace a little. The technicians were still trying to gather information on how the balance shifted with the larger wings and thus increased downforce in the rear in 2017.

Wehrlein instead of Ocon at Mercedes

Also at Mercedes It was worth taking a closer look - albeit less at the technology and more at the driving personnel. Manor pilot Pascal Wehrlein sat surprisingly in the cockpit of the Silver Arrow. Originally, test driver Esteban Ocon was planned for the second session.

Mercedes justification for the sudden change of plan: Allegedly, Rosberg was not able to complete the program the day before. However, the engineers wanted a more experienced pilot than Ocon for the development. Since Lewis Hamilton had other obligations, Wehrlein came unexpectedly to use. Ocon will not celebrate its Silver Arrows premiere until Silverstone.

Because Mercedes has now used regular drivers on both test days, inexperienced junior staff must be used in the remaining tests in accordance with the rules. Hamilton therefore has to do without a mission, which should not be particularly difficult for the world champion. In the previous year, the champion got through the season quite well without the additional practice units.

Verstappen best time at the end

In terms of lap time, Wehrlein could not quite match the performance of regular Nico Rosberg from the previous day. The young man with soft tires was missing 8 tenths. In the daily standings that was enough for 3rd place. Max Verstappen set the best. The winner on Sunday drove the fastest lap of the session with soft tires in 1: 23.267 minutes one hour before the lunch break. Second place also went to a youngster. McLaren substitute StoffelIn his best lap on Supersofts, Vandoorne was a good 7 tenths behind Verstappen.

In contrast to the previous day, there were at least two interruptions at the end of the test week. Manor driver Jordan King pulled his car into the gravel trap at Turn 7 shortly before lunch. The Briton was able to continue his program in the afternoon. It didn't go any further for Daniil Kvyat, who broke down with his Toro Rosso three quarters of an hour before the end of the session after 116 laps with an engine failure Made ends meet. Kevin Magnussen (122) and Max Verstappen (118) also got into the three-digit range with the revised Renault engine. The engine with more power and improved driveability has thus passed the reliability test. Only Williams and Manor missed the 100-lap mark in the end.

We have collected some pictures from the second test day in Barcelona in our gallery.
