Pascal Wehrlein: Positive balance after the GP China 2016

Wehrlein draws a positive balance

D rei Grand Prix, three finishings. After 16th place in Australia and 13th place in Bahrain, Pascal Wehrlein came 18th in China. A respectable result in a race without failures. 'At least we beat 4 other cars on our own.' In 2015 that was still unthinkable for the small English team. But Wehrlein also demands: 'We now need big steps forward.'

After all, the Worndorf was able to sniff the points again. From round 5 to 13, the 21-year-old German was in the top ten. He was one of the 11 drivers who started the race with the soft tires. And to the 7 drivers who did not pit to change tires during the safety car phase. That even meant 4th place for 4 rounds. 'A nice feeling, even if I knew that it would only last for a short time.'

Wehrlein-Poker with Supersoft didn’t quite work

Wehrlein defended himself with brains. 'I didn't fight for long against drivers that I can't keep anyway. Otherwise I would have just lost time.' Time that was precious in the end. Wehrlein crossed the finish line 4.7 seconds behind Kevin Magnussen and 1.6 seconds ahead of Romain Grosjean. And drew a positive balance: 'I think it was a very good race.'

Towards the end of his 4 stints, a well-known problem arose at the Manor. The car is eating its tires. 'Then you fight with blunt weapons.' That's why the poker didn't work out to overtake Magnussen with a sentence of super soft at the end of the race: 'The tires on our car only have a limited window and it wasn't quite enough.' Nevertheless, Wehrlein dares to say: 'We have the speed of the Sauber and Renault.'
