L ewis Hamilton leaves nothing out. 83 pole positions, 73 wins, five world titles, 3,018 world championship points. The 408 points in the 2018 season are a record. Where is all of this supposed to lead? Who will stop this Hamilton one day? Sebastian Vettel was only able to do it five times this year. Max Verstappen only arrived twice before the Englishman. Hamilton also gets the top grade 10 for his overall performance. Vettel and Verstappen found their master. And that left only the grade 9 for both.
Vettel has to share this grade once again with his future teammate Charles Leclerc. The Sauber driver drives better from race to race. He finished seventh in each of the last three Grand Prix. In Abu Dhabi, Carlos Sainz stole the title Best of the Rest from him. Leclerc is this season's discovery. And Valtteri Bottas the disappointment. The Finn did not achieve a single victory. Bottas finished the season with four 5th places. Not enough for a Mercedes driver.
No surcharge for rollover
Nico Hülkenberg wanted to say goodbye to his most successful Formula 1 season to date with a strong performance. The Renault driver finished the season as the best behind the drivers of the three top teams. But the season end turned into a horror show for him. After the rollover, he was trapped under his Renault for 194 seconds. Since Hülkenberg was not entirely innocent of the collision, despite starting position 10, Fernando Alonso only got a 6th grade.
Fernando Alonso left Formula 1 with an 11th place and a 7th grade. The Spaniard wanted to force a World Cup point as a farewell. He cut the distance three times to catch up with Kevin Magnussen in 10th place. That gave three times five seconds of punishment. And a note deduction for an otherwise flawless and combative race.
