N ico Hülkenberg beamed. Again faster than teammate Paul di Resta, again in the top ten. 'It was still harder to get into the top ten than I thought. For the first time, I managed all three training sections optimally. My Q2 round was really top notch.' The problem was lurking in the third sector in corners 15 and 16. 'I can't get the understeer off that. When I see the Red Bull knocking it in there, I get jealous.'

This third sector offers Hülkenberg the same driving pleasure as the Suzuka S-curves. 'Here, too, there are only curves, nothing to rest in between. If one of these six curves does not fit, you immediately lose your rhythm and can forget the whole sector.'

Sauber wants to attack from behind

Hulkenberg fears that he will have to orientate himself backwards in the race. Not because of the Mercedes that are right on his neck. 'They have too much tire wear. But I have to reckon with Button and the Sauber.' At Sauber, they expect a lot from starting positions 12 and 13.

Team manager Beat Zehnder: 'We just have to wait and be patient. At some point the problem with Mercedes will resolve itself if they have tire problems. Had there not been a yellow flag in the final minutes of qualifying , we would have made it into the top ten. We could also have driven Hülkenberg's time, and we are better at racing thrills. '
