At the last meeting of the Formula 1 Commission, the team representatives received an 84-page document. Content: The new rules for 2016 and the presentation of the 2017 car. a uto motor und sport has already taken a look at the paper. We can reassure the fans. In the next year they only have to learn a few new rules.

Practically nothing changes on the car. Except that the area of the headrest in the cockpit is set to at least 35,750 mm². And all vacant areas facing the cockpit wall have to be filled with the same foam material that is used in the headrest.

FIA closes MGU-H loophole

The biggest changes are with the Engine and tires. In Appendix 4 of the engine regulations, the 66 possible development tokens will be redistributed over the coming years. 32 in winter 2015/16, 25 in the following year, then 20, 15 and 3 in the last two years of the existing engine regulations. But that is exactly the point. In 2018 there should be new, simpler and cheaper engines.

Another new feature is that the engineers can access all 42 permitted development areas. An interesting change can be found in Article 5.1.6. of the technical regulations. It says: The turbocharger shaft may only be connected to the turbine, the compressor and the MGU-H. The FIA wants to prevent the MGU-H from being hung on the crankshaft. Apparently there was a request in this direction, and the FIA wants to concretize such a loophole.

Engine manufacturers are also allowed to offer old engines

Pirelli will be offering three tire compounds next year. We have already described how this works exactly (-> see story ). In the future, engine manufacturers will also be able to offer engines that are one year old. In Article 23.5. It says: Only drive units that are identical to a homologated drive unit in accordance with the rules in Appendix 4 may be used until 2020.

In addition to the tires and the engine distribution, there are other adjustments to the sports law. In Article 6.5. the wording is changed because there was a loophole in the law. So far it was said: Will the race before the end of the second lapaborted and not started again, there are no points. With more than two laps up to 75 percent of the race distance, half points are awarded.

Until someone found out: What actually happens with exactly two laps? Now it says in the text: If the leader has completed two laps or less before the abandonment, there are no points. This is what happened at the last GP2 race of the year in Abu Dhabi. After a crash in the second corner, the Tecpro barriers were so badly damaged that a restart was no longer possible in the time available.

Immediately DRS after a VSC phase

At Bernie Ecclestone's request, the expansion to 21 races in Article 5.4. of the sporting regulations. For a world championship at least 8 and a maximum of 21 Grand Prix must take place.

The virtual safety car will also be used in training sessions in the future. Training no longer has to be interrupted if a damaged car is towed at the edge of the track. In the race, DRS is allowed again immediately at the end of a VSC phase. Up until now, like a real safety car, you had to wait two laps until the rear wing could be flattened again.

Appendix 8 reacts to the criticism of some teams that new teams have too great an advantage in aerodynamic development have their car. In the future, every new team must nominate a wind tunnel and specify the corresponding wind tunnel model no later than 7 days after their registration. The same applies to the use of CFD.

In Article 3, 12 additional test days are finally permitted during the season. The sessions over six times two days are reserved exclusively for tests with the wider tires for 2017.
