M it places 5 and 9 of Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button had said goodbye to McLaren in Hungary for the summer break. The upward trend of the Honda racer was clearly visible at last. The development program finally showed the first results. In order for the shape curve to continue upwards, there is another step in Belgium. Honda brings an improved engine.

Honda boss expects difficult race

'As planned, Honda is an update of the internal combustion engine in Spa in order to further improve the power unit for the second half of the season, 'confirmed Honda sports director Yasuhisa Arai. 'The free practice sessions will be very important to test the new drive system in connection with the cars. The race will be difficult for the team and the drivers because of the expected grid penalties and the long power track.'

Because McLaren-Honda has already used the Joker engine approved by the FIA World Council in Hungary, the use of the new components for Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso in Belgium is going backwards after qualifying. The changes to the combustion system of the V6 engine also cost 2 tokens. This means that the Japanese only have 5 of the former 9 development brands.

McLaren successes not before Singapore

Despite the power update, team boss Eric Boullier warns against too high expectations in Spa and at it following race in Monza. 'Because of the special engine and output characteristics, the routes don't exactly play our part. We'll probably wait until Singapore and beyond until the fruits of our work are reflected in good results.'
