M ichael Schumacher will leave Mercedes after the 2012 season. The Silver Arrows team had advertised Lewis Hamilton as a replacement for the 43-year-old for several weeks. Now the 2008 world champion has finally signed the contract. Hamilton will drive Mercedes by 2015. This means that there is no longer any room for Schumacher with the Stuttgart works team.

Schumacher and Mercedes end cooperation

Mercedes officially announced the deal on Friday (September 28th). 'On behalf of Mercedes, I would like to thank him for his important contribution to the development of our team over the past three seasons,' said team boss Ross Brawn, who persuaded Schumi to make a comeback before the 2012 season. 'His energy and dedication have never let up, even when our results did not meet our expectations. We are determined to end the 2012 season together on a high. It was and is a pleasure to work with Michael.'

Schumacher himself also found conciliatory words at the farewell: 'I had three wonderful years with the Mercedes-F1-Team, which unfortunately didn't go as sportily as we all had wished. I wish Lewis all the best and everyone Team the success that we have worked so hard to build. I would like to thank the team for their trust and the guys for their unconditional commitment. Now I will concentrate on the upcoming races. '

What Schumi becomes after his expulsion, he didn't want to say anything about that yet. Despite some driving errors and unnecessary failures this season, the fire in the 43-year-old is still a long way off. And after the unfortunate departure of Mercedes, the record champion will want to know again.

Schumacher on Sauber?

As a goal at the end of his three-year plan with Mercedes, Schumacher actually wanted to celebrate a world championship . But he was far from that for tests. While team-mate Nico Rosberg brought in at least one victory for the works team from Stuttgart, Schumi only got one lucky podium (Valencia 2012). Does he really want to end his career with this unfinished comeback?

The seven-time world champion is not there without alternatives. Sauber has stated behind closed doors more than once that they would like to work with Schumacher in 2013. This year, the car has proven that it can with the top teamscan keep up with Formula 1. This would significantly shorten the way to work for Schumacher, who is from Switzerland by choice.

A move to Sauber would also come full circle. In 1989 the Kerpener started his international racing career in a Group C sports car from the Hinwil racing team. Schumi manager Sabine Kehm was already in Singapore for an informal discussion at a table with the Sauber team management. The content of the contract was of course not discussed.

Perez is to replace Hamilton at McLaren

At Sauber, there would even be a place free for the coming season. As McLaren has now confirmed, Sergio Perez will take over the free cockpit from Lewis Hamilton. The Mexican, who drew attention to himself with three podium places this year, will probably bring a few million of his Latin American sponsors with him to Woking.

Should Schumacher really switch to Sauber, he would have to cut back significantly on his salary. The small private team from Hinwil cannot keep up financially with the resources of a factory team. If you don't come to an agreement with Schumi, the record man's career would be over after 308 Grand Prix races in Sao Paulo. 'That is simply not an issue today,' said Schumi manager Kehm on Friday (September 28th).

On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton is starting a new chapter in his career: 'The time has now come for me to take on a new challenge, and I'm looking forward to starting a new chapter for Mercedes Mercedes-Benz has an unbelievable motorsport tradition and a passionate will to win, which I also share. Together we can master this great new challenge. I believe that I can help to bring the Silver Arrows to the top and our common ambitious goal to win the world championships. '
