T he biggest surprise of the third training wasn't that unusual order in terms of time, but that the session was carried out at all. Since early Friday morning (October 24th, 2015), heavy rain has been pouring over Texas. Flood warnings have been issued in Austin. Nevertheless, the race management decided to whistle the session on time.

Because the precipitation should get worse during the day and it could still be wet on Sunday morning, the FIA officials announced that the result might be of the third training session could decide the order of the starting grid. That is why the drivers turned significantly more laps than they would have liked in tricky conditions.

Hamilton sets clear best time in practice

In the end, Lewis Hamilton took the lead in the classification. The champion circumnavigated the course in 1: 59.517 minutes, making him the only pilot who stayed below the 2-minute limit. Sebastian Vettel found himself distanced by 8 tenths on rank 2. Just behind in 3rd position, Nico Hülkenberg proved his reputation as an excellent rain driver.

In the ragged times table, Williams driver Valtteri Bottas landed in 4th place ahead of Toro Rosso junior Carlos Sainz. If the third practice session is counted as a qualifying replacement, Kimi Raikkonen would start in seventh place between the two Red Bull drivers Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo.

Rosberg in the gravel bed

Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes did not get along so well. In the meantime he turned into the gravel and damaged the front wing. His best lap time was only enough for 9th place. Felipe Massa in the second Williams completed the top ten.

Incidentally, the third training session took place almost entirely in camera. Due to the adverse weather conditions, the route was not open to fans in the morning. The gates do not open until 12 p.m. local time.
