N normally the third free practice is on Saturday set for an hour. In Singapore, the last test opportunity before qualifying was shortened to 57 minutes. Vitaly Petrov had thrown himself into the gang with his Caterham in the last section of the route. After a brief attempt to drag the car into the garage, the Russian finally had to park the Caterham in the pit entrance.
The race management therefore decided to stop the session early in order to remove the damaged car away from the danger area and not risking a collision at the accident site that is difficult to see. For some pilots such as Jenson Button, Mark Webber or Pastor Maldonado, the accident came at the wrong time. They had to abort their qualifying test run with the super soft tires and did not end up in the top ten.
Vettel sets third best time in practice
Sebastian Vettel had decided a little earlier that the red to buckle marked rubbers. As in the first two sessions the day before, the world champion set the fastest time on Saturday. The Heppenheimer completed his fastest lap with 1: 47.947 minutes - nobody has been that fast this weekend.
As expected, Vettel expects the greatest resistance in qualifying from the other two Singapore specialists Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who came in third and six tenths respectively in the third training session.
Hülkenberg continues well
Nico Hülkenberg landed fourth in the third training session. The Rhinelander in Force India was able to confirm his good form from the previous day. The chances for the youngster are good that there will be enough space in the front rows in qualifying.
Right behind Hülkenberg, Kimi Raikkonen also gave a sign of life. After subdued times in the first training sessions, Lotus finally seems to have found some speed. While the first five drivers landed within a second, Felipe Massa was already 1.5 seconds behind Vettel in sixth place.
The best Mercedes driver was Nico Rosberg, who was behind the second Force India Paul the Resta ended up in eighth place. Michael Schumacher in the other Silver Arrow came in tenth place. However, moving into the Q3 will not be so easy for Mercedes. As mentioned, Webber and Button only came in eleventh and with the harder mixtwelve.
Glock with a strange defect
For Timo Glock, the third training session was over after just 24 minutes. When braking into Turn 20, his engine suddenly gave full throttle. In order to stop the Marussia in front of the gang, the Hesse had to step into the irons. Glock avoided the impact and further damage under extreme smoke development. The engineers now have to find out why the engine suddenly revved up.
In order to rescue the emergency-stopped Marussia from the track, the Marshalls waved yellow flags. Sebastian Vettel still improved his best time in this phase. He announced over the radio that he had the situation under control and had taken off the gas. It is still unclear whether the FIA stewards will take another look at the situation or even face a penalty.
Perez and Webber touch the gang
In addition to Glock and Petrov, Mark Webber and Sergio Perez also caused shock moments. Both pilots went with too much momentum into the left turn into the underpass and slipped with the right rear wheel against the boards. At Webber, the tire immediately lost air. Both the Sauber and the Red Bull had to be checked for further damage in the garage. But both were then able to go out on the track again.
