W as applied to the 2014 season, and was continued in the first seven of the previous eight races in 2015, also in England: Mercedes has the competition under control. In the third free practice session at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in the one-hour session with a time of 1: 32.917 minutes.

Mercedes suspected a gearbox breakdown at Rosberg

And with a lead of over half a second on his greatest rival Nico Rosberg. The German could not go the pace of his adversary on Saturday morning. On Friday it was the other way around. Rosberg had set the pace. However, it has to be said that the World Championship runner-up was unable to prepare for his last run with the medium tires as planned. Because his crew discovered an oil leak in the transmission that needed to be repaired. If the repair hadn't worked out, it would have been very bitter for Rosberg. Because a change of the control box would have earned him a penalty of five starting positions. On the hard rubber, however, Rosberg was also a few tenths behind Hamilton.

Ferrari was far from the top time. No matter what type of tire. On the softer medium set, the distance to the front shrank a bit, but it is still alarmingly large. Kimi Räikkönen was already three quarters of a second behind in third place. The fast and fluid passages of Silverstone are Mercedes terrain. The updates to the car will probably not help Ferrari either. Sebastian Vettel needed a second longer than Hamilton for his fastest lap. The battle for pole position in the afternoon should therefore only be fought between the two Mercedes.

Red Bull without much time improvement on Medium

The two Toro Rosso confirmed their strong form on Friday yesterday. Max Verstappen (+ 1.230 seconds) and Carlos Sainz (+ 1.365 seconds) ended up in fifth and sixth place. The youngsters can be expected to be one of the top starting places in the award. They also impressed in the long run on Friday.

Williams was fourth in the Formula 1 field in the third free practice session. Felipe Massa was the faster man in the FW37. However, he was only 0.037 seconds ahead of his stable mate Valtteri Bottas. The gap to the front is already a huge 1.5 seconds.

Behind WilliamsDaniil Kvyat (Red Bull) and Pastor Maldonado (Lotus) completed the top 10. Particularly noticeable. On the hard Pirelli tires, Red Bull was better at music than with the softer set. Both Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo (12th) could only improve by around two tenths. Pirelli sports director Paul Hembery puts the difference between medium and hard at eight tenths of a second.

In eleventh place, Nico Hülkenberg just missed a place in the top ten. The goal of finishing in the points on Sunday remains realistic. The three slowest teams in training three were Sauber, McLaren and Manor. The same picture as yesterday.
