W eltmeister Lewis Hamilton is whole again above. After setting the fastest time on a semi-wet track in the first practice session, the Mercedes driver also drove the fastest lap in the second session. In the afternoon, however, the track in Albert Park was not only semi-damp, it was very damp.

Australian training on a wet track

In the second training session, there was no longer any need to use slick tires to think. A heavy shower during the break had completely flooded the asphalt. At the beginning of the training session, no pilot at all dared go out onto the track. The fear of slipping was too great.

Only slowly did the fans get some driving. After half an hour, Nico Rosberg involuntarily demonstrated how tricky the conditions are on the slippery surface. While accelerating, the German lost control of his Mercedes at the exit of turn 7 and slid forward into the concrete wall.

Rosberg damages new S -Schacht-Nose

The front wing and nose were damaged in the impact. Rosberg first tried to get back to the pits, but then had to park his battered car at the edge of the track on the instructions of the FIA. The danger of sharp pieces of carbon debris being spread on the slope was obviously too high for the rulers.

An explosive detail about the story: Rosberg's Silver Arrow was on the move with the new nose (with S-slot). In the first training session, the engineers had the cars fitted with the old front end because there were not enough spare parts from the update. As team boss Toto Wolff confirmed to auto motor und sport , there are now only 2 new noses left. Another version is supposed to arrive in Melbourne overnight.

Rosberg wasn't the only pilot who made a slip. The two Mexicans Sergio Perez and Esteban Gutierrez temporarily ruffled through the gravel. But they were able to free themselves and return to the pits without damaging them.

H├╝lkenberg best German in 2nd place

The time table was not very meaningful due to the changing conditions. 7 pilots completely renounced a flying lap. The drivers from Williams, Sauber, Renault and Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappenentered the evaluation without time. At the upper end of the ranking, Nico H├╝lkenberg was able to secure second place behind Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel landed in 8th position, Pascal Wehrlein was at least eleventh.
