D he first day of training in Barcelona promises a lot of excitement for the rest of the weekend. On the faster route in the afternoon, Sebastian Vettel improved the times from the morning by more than a second. With 1: 19.965 minutes, the Heppenheimer was the only one to stay below the 1.20 mark.

His team-mate Mark Webber was most likely to follow the German Red Bull driver. In the end, the two 'cops' separated only two tenths. However, the Australian drove his fastest lap well ahead of Vettel when the track didn't offer that much grip.

Schumacher with a significant increase

Michael Schumacher also took to the track alongside Webber. In the end, the record world champion was missing seven tenths on Vettel and half a second on Webber. Despite the still considerable deficit on Red Bull, Schumi was able to record his first day of training as a success. The completely renovated Silver Arrow seems to be much more competitive than it was last time. In addition, Schumacher left his team-mate Nico Rosberg (7th place) well behind in both sessions, which hadn't happened this season before.

Directly behind Schumi's Silver Arrow, two other favorites nestled in wait. Local hero Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) finished fourth, 85 hundredths of a second behind the leaders. Lewis Hamilton put his McLaren another four tenths behind in fifth place. Robert Kubica also confirmed his good form from the first races and recorded the sixth-best time of the day.

Sutil in top ten, Sauber improved

Behind Nico Rosberg (Mercedes), Felipe Massa (Ferrari) and Jenson Button (McLaren) secured Force India driver Adrian Sutil last in the top ten. In the morning, the German had to watch from outside when substitute Paul di Resta was allowed to take over Sutil's cockpit.

Pedro de la Rosa also had to watch for a long time with transmission problems in the morning. In front of his numerous fans, the Catalan came in eleventh. The second Sauber also made a good impression in 13th place.

H├╝lkenberg crash stops training

For Nico H├╝lkenberg, on the other hand, the day of training was extremely modest. In the morning the engine cooling failed on his Williams and caused an early end. In the afternoon, the man from the Lower Rhine threw his blue and white vehicle into the gang of his own accord.Half an hour after the start of training, 'Hulk' hit the gang violently, which even led to a brief interruption of training.

The fight of the newbies was clearly won by Lotus on Friday. The traditional English-Malaysian team had the other two new Formula 1 teams from Virgin and HRT clearly under control. The gap to the top is still considerable, however. Lotus was more than four seconds behind in both the morning and afternoon. Timo Glock didn't even get into step with his modified Virgin that afternoon. The Wersauer came in last, 6.6 seconds behind.
