Formula 1 test in Mugello: the test plan

F test drives were the order of the day during the season. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the teams agreed to test only before and after the season. For the first time since 2008 there is an exception again. Formula 1 meets in Mugello, around 30 kilometers north of Florence. The 5.245-kilometer circuit is part of the Ferrari empire.

Formula 1 visits Mugello

The red cars were regulars on the track from 1996 to 2008, which was inaugurated in July 1974. It is the successor to the legendary Mugello street circuit, which was over 66 kilometers long. The lap record on the modern Mugello circuit is of course held by a Ferrari driver. Rubens Barrichello achieved a time of 1.18.704 minutes on February 9, 2004, which corresponds to an average speed of 239.911 km /h.

A value that modern cars can hardly undercut. In 2004 Formula 1 was still powered by ten-cylinder engines with around 900 hp. The last time Mugello hit the headlines was in August 2009, when Michael Schumacher prepared his comeback in an older Ferrari as a replacement for the injured Felipe Massa. He had to cancel the event because of severe neck pain.

One could almost speak of a small Grand Prix when the GP convoy set up their tents in Mugello from May 1st to 3rd. With the exception of HRT, which canceled its participation at short notice on Wednesday (April 25th), all teams are there. A total of 26 drivers are deployed.

Formula 1 teams test new technology for Barcelona

It will be an exciting three days for the engineers. The teams are testing their first major expansion stages, which will then celebrate their racing premiere ten days later in Barcelona. It is therefore expected with interest whether the order in the field will shift or whether everyone will simply be faster within the same framework.

Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, Sauber, Toro Rosso and Sauber will compete with their regular drivers . Mark Webber joins Red Bull. Wednesday lunchtime there is a flying change to Sebastian Vettel. Same game at Toro Rosso with Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo and at Marussia with Charles Pic and Timo Glock.

Mercedes splits the first test day between Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. Schumacher then drives on Wednesday, Rosberg on the final day. Ferrari uses Fernando Alonso on two days (Tuesday, Thursday). Felipe Massa must be having a test dayput up with. Sauber also divides the work unevenly. Two days in Kamui Kobayashi, only one for Sergio Perez.

Chance for the test drivers

The other teams let their test drivers take over. Jérôme d‘Ambrosio starts at Lotus. Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean later take over. Williams distributes the work between Valtteri Bottas, Bruno Senna and Pastor Maldonado. Caterham takes the opportunity to make some money. Venezuelan Rodolfo Gonzalez will test against Cash on Tuesday. Then Vitaly Petrov and Heikki Kovalainen get in.

Force India comes with the line-up Jules Bianchi, Paul di Resta and Nico Hülkenberg. At McLaren, the situation was unclear until the end. Despite the problems in Bahrain, the two regular drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button apparently want to take a short break. At the wheel of the McLaren sit the two test drivers Gary Paffett and Oliver Turvey.
