Formula 1: Michael Schumacher tenth in Australia
Subscriptions & booklets

M ichael Schumacher took the race like all the top -Pilots with intermediate tires because of the brief rain shower shortly before the start. From seventh on the grid, the Kerpener was promptly involved in the only starting collision through no fault of his own: McLaren-Mercedes driver Jenson Button tried to overtake Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) in the inside lane and touched the Spaniard. The impact catapulted Alonso directly into Michael Schumacher's Silver Arrow, whose front spoiler was damaged in the process.

Because the race management sent the safety car to the track because of another collision between Kobayashi (Sauber), H├╝lkenberg (Williams) and Buemi (Toro Rosso), Schumacher was able to switch the damaged spoiler to yellow, but fell back to last place anyway.

Race over after the start

'Of course my race was more or less over after the accident at the start in the first corner, Because from then on I couldn't do much more with regard to the very top positions. The collision on the first lap was a typical racing accident for which nobody can blame. '

Schumacher dueled afterwards the race release until shortly before the end with Jaime Alguersuari's Toro Rosso. 'The duel was fun, but I hardly had any chance of overtaking because the Toro Rosso has very good top speed.' It was only on lap 54 that Schumacher was able to squeeze past the Spaniard and shortly thereafter also overtook Sauber driver Pedro de la Rosa.

Increase compared to Bahrain

' Overall, I'm not unhappy with the race, 'said Schumacher. 'We were able to set competitive lap times and were closer to the top teams than we were in qualifying.' On the last lap, Schumacher set his fastest lap time of 1.29.185 minutes. For comparison: The fastest lap of winner Jenson Button was 1.29.291 minutes.

The increase compared to the somewhat disappointing qualifying - Rosberg and Schumacher qualified for starting positions 6 and 7, but almost behind Nine tenths of a second to Button's pole time - Schumacher is able to explain: 'We were beaten below value in qualifying. A tear-off visor got tangled in the front spoiler of my car during qualifying. That cost us two to three places because theFlow to the wing was disturbed. My team-mate Nico Rosberg would also have placed himself further up the front under optimal conditions. '

Schumacher believes that his team has made good progress compared to Bahrain:' We're on the right track and I'm traveling with a positive one Feeling from Melbourne. '
