When Robert Kubica left the garage with the new Renault R30 for the first time, the lapwings looked eagerly at it Automobile. Was that P presentation car just a show car , or does Renault really want to start the test season with an infusion of last year's car?

The answer was disappointing: The Renault has hardly changed overnight. Despite the staid design, the yellow and black car has some special features, and only the future will tell whether the path was the right one.

Renault R30: chubby nose with bumps

The front is a revised version of the chubby nose that earned Renault the title of ugliest car in the field last year. She stretches a little higher into the wind and has attached the aprons further down to the sides to create a closed channel under the nose. The arrangement makes it necessary for two small bumps to grow out of the carbon tube in the area of the front axle to make space for the lever of the struts.

The side pods are also strange: a subtle waist, very expansive up to the Rear. Where others build extremely narrow in the area of the transmission, the Renault R30 is completely contrary to the trend, unusually wide, possibly even up to a maximum of 800 millimeters. This suggests that the tank was built wider rather than length. This lowers the center of gravity and saves the wheelbase, which you can see in the car. It looks shorter than the competing products. It is quite possible that the mechanical cornerstones were more important to the engineers under Technical Director James Allison than aerodynamics. That would be surprising, because Allison is actually an aerodynamicist.

Base model for the 2010 season

Renault is also taking a controversial approach when it comes to venting the hot cooling air. It only escapes through a gap in the fairing, into which the exhaust also ends. The rear wing only stands on a stilt. This solution is also demonstrated by the new McLaren MP4-25. The profile of the rear wing is interesting. It is divided in two and has a delta shape when viewed from above.

According to the engineers, the first version of the R30 is only a basic model that will be inBahrain will change a lot. The real R30 will not be available until the GP Canada in June. Obviously, the Renault designers designed their car to be as flexible as possible in order to be able to better answer the open questions posed by the regulations with the refueling ban and the narrower front tires.
