I n Silverstone went to the Formula 1 teams valuable test time lost because of the heavy rain. And in Hockenheim, too, they should have to deal with changeable conditions. At the beginning of the training it was still dry, but in between it rained again and again and the track was slippery. This makes it difficult to collect meaningful data on the new technology updates.

McLaren with a major update

McLaren traveled to Hockenheim with the biggest changes. The modifications, which are especially visible on the strongly indented side pods, cannot be too bad. Even if the times are to be enjoyed with caution due to the changeable weather. In the end, both drivers dominated the ranking. Jenson Button set the fastest lap in the morning in 1.16.595 minutes. Lewis Hamilton, who celebrates his 100th Grand Prix this weekend, followed 0.498 seconds behind.

Fernando Alonso came in third. The World Championship leader completed 21 laps and was 0.775 seconds behind the McLaren team. At Ferrari, Friday was used to try out new baffles and some new parts that are not yet to be used in the race. Michael Schumacher won the title of the best placed German. He put his Mercedes in fourth place. The Silver Arrows are also experimenting with a new front wing.

Double DRS at Lotus

At Sauber, the focus was also on collecting data. In the first practice session, Sauber driver Sergio Perez secured fifth place ahead of Nico Hülkenberg in the Force India. A new rear wing was used at Force India. The German was missing a second on the top. Nico Rosberg took seventh place ahead of Felipe Massa. Pastor Maldonado in Williams and Romain Grosjean complete the top ten. In contrast to team mate Kimi Räikkönen, Grosjean was on the road with the tried and tested version of the Lotus, Räikkönen tested a kind of double DRS and finished 15th.

Sebastian Vettel started his home Grand Prix somewhat cautiously. The Red Bull driver was only 12th. Timo Glock finished 22nd in the Marussia, ahead of the HRT. The second training session in Hockenheim starts at 2 p.m.
