D as the second free practice at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne was dominated by McLaren-Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton set the best time with a lap time of 1.25.801 minutes, his team-mate Jenson Button was just under three tenths of a second behind.
The training results were strongly influenced by the weather: The second training session took place under a cloudy sky and significantly cooler temperatures than at noon. At the beginning of the training, it started to rain lightly, but the track dried off quickly. After 35 minutes of the second training session, a heavy shower hit the Melbourne street circuit again, prompting almost all Formula 1 drivers to greatly reduce their driving activities. It was only in the last few minutes of the second training session that the drivers were able to set the lap times at the beginning of the training session.
Schumacher with a strong final sprint
Michael Schumacher initially only drove in damp conditions after problems apparently appeared in the rear of his Mercedes at the start of training. Shortly before the end of training, the seven-time world champion improved to fourth place with a lap time of 1,26.511 minutes. Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel also wanted to use the dry conditions at the end of training to improve times, but the youngster spun in turn five and in the last run of the assault therefore ended the training session only in 16th position.
His Australian team-mate Mark Webber improved to 3rd place. Ferrari drivers Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso finished the training in disappointing 17th and 15th place.
Renault again with good times
In view of the relatively short time span under dry conditions, only limited conclusions can be drawn from the result of the second training session true balance of power in Melbourne. The Renault drivers Vitaly Petrov (place 5) and Robert Kubica (11th place) once again demonstrated the competitiveness of Renault.
Mercedes GP driver Nico Rosberg finished 10th with a lap time of 1.26.956 minutes. Force India driver Adrian Sutil - who had decided not to participate in the first practice session on Friday afternoon in favor of substitute driver Paul di Resta -set a fragrance brand with place 7 His Italian team-mate Vitantonio Liuzzi underpinned the strong performance of Force India with 8th place.
The capricious weather also washed some outsiders into the top ten: Toro Rosso driver Sebastien Buemi finished sixth, the Sauber- Drivers Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi finished 12th and 13th. Virgin pilot Timo Glock landed behind in 21st place.
