I n the daily ranking list on Wednesday, Felipe Massa ended up in fifth place . After 106 laps a time of 1.22.257 minutes was recorded. The Brazilian was 0.654 seconds behind the fastest time. He continued the work that Fernando Alonso had started the day before.

Ferrari only with small updates

It was about the comparison of two exhaust versions. A modified old one and the current one that was driven in Bahrain. The only new part on Massa's Ferrari F2012 were four baffles under the chassis. They are similar to those of Red Bull and Lotus. Curved and slightly offset from one another. On the last day of testing at Mugello, Alonso was testing a completely new exhaust with new side panels.

The second half of Ferrari's long-awaited counterattack to the problems at the start of the season only came to the car in Barcelona. For example a new nose, a new front wing and a new diffuser. Felipe Massa would have liked more for Mugello. 'It would have been better to test more new developments here in Mugello. I practically only ran a comparison test with a few new details today. The new parts for Fernando will only arrive here tonight.' That shows: Ferrari develops on the last groove. Every additional hour in the wind tunnel can be helpful.

Engineers looking for a second

Ferrari wants to fill the gap Close top teams as quickly as possible. That is what the Tifosi expect. You don't give the reds forever. Felipe Massa is skeptical whether the big leap will work in one go. 'That would be too optimistic. The others are also developing. We have to assume that they will improve by three tenths. That means that we have to take a giant step in order to catch up with them.'

Ferrari is an average of seven tenths behind the top. So the engineers are looking for a second. Massa confirms: 'There are many areas in our car that we are not happy with.'

Mugello is not the ideal place for Ferrari to sort out these weak points. It's the poor top speed and the lack of traction. Mugello has a 1.1 kilometer straight, but no slow corners. So you won't know until Barcelona whether you have eliminated the deficits.
