N after two wins in a row, Fernando Alonso had to bake small rolls in Hungary. The Spaniard was able to shine in the rain at Silverstone and Hockenheim. In more normal conditions in Budapest, the Ferrari had no chance against the other top teams. The motto was damage limitation.

Ferrari only fourth force

'Fifth place was more than the maximum', the two-time world champion later drew a positive balance. 'The Lotus was faster than us, the McLaren was faster than us and the Red Bull was faster than us. Actually, we should have ended up in seventh place.'

Of the teams mentioned, Alonso was able to beat the competitor Jenson Leaving Button and Mark Webber behind. 'That was due to the different strategies,' analyzed the Asturian. 'That they pitted three times helped us.'

In the end, the Hungarian weekend could even be considered a success. 'We actually thought that we had lost our lead here. Instead, we were even able to extend it to runner-up. That is a welcome surprise.'

Alonso calls for developments on the car

Team boss Stefano Domenicali was also relieved: 'Fernando can now go into the summer break with a 40 point lead. He deserves the vacation.'

Alonso is by no means reassured. After the race, the driver asked for further improvements to his car. As the fourth force in the field, he cannot keep the lead for long. 'Our development has stalled since Barcelona. We had some new parts, but not all of them made it to the car. After the summer break, we have to take a step forward.'

Behind Alonso are with Mark Webber, Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Räikkönen four pilots within eight points. And who fears Alonso most: 'I rate Lewis and Sebastian the most. They pose the greatest danger,' said Alonso. Domenicali agreed with his pilot. 'We will certainly not underestimate anyone.'
