A ls Sebastian Vettel retired after a few meters with a puncture, hopes lay of the fans on an exciting race especially in the hands of Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard did his best. Over long stretches of the 55-lap distance, he kept the gap to the eventual winner under five seconds.

Alonso unbeatable Hamilton

'It was like an individual time trial,' explained the Ferrari driver later. 'I approached every lap like in qualifying to close the gap. But it was only a tenth up and down.' The distance only changed significantly when it was lapped. 'It all came down to how easy it was to get past and in which section of the route you ran into a slow car.'

Alonso always stayed within striking distance, but the flawless Hamilton offered no target that day. 'We can be satisfied. It was a fantastic race,' said the third place in the World Championship in a conciliatory manner. 'At the last pit stop we tried to stay outside a little longer. We were close. But then I ran into traffic in the pit lane and lost something again.'

Alonso is happy about the trophy

The fans were thus deprived of an exciting duel in the final laps. 'Even if we had passed the stop, it would have been difficult to win the race. I think they had better pace in the final stint, so I'm happy with second place.'

He was happy Alonso not only about the 18 points but especially about the cup for second place. 'What makes the podium so special is that I have now collected 73 podium places and thus also 73 trophies in Formula 1. I have at least one of all the racetracks I've raced on. Only one thing was missing at home and that was Abu Dhabi, because I've never been on the podium here in recent years. Now I've finally got all the tracks together. '
