D he Formula 1 fans got in Catalonia on Tuesday (May 12th, 2015) another serve was served. 2 days after Nico Rosberg's victory, 9 out of 10 teams took to the track again in the same place. Only Manor Marussia started the journey home early. The rest used the two-day test opportunity to collect data.

Rosberg faster than in qualifying

In the best conditions, the pilots went on the first installation laps at 9 a.m. sharp. At first, data was diligently collected using aerodynamic measuring devices. Then the pace was increased steadily. Some teams also tried new parts. For example, new air scoops were attached to the side of the airbox on the Mercedes, as they were already known from last year's Silver Arrow.

With the additional 'ears', Nico Rosberg was again fastest on the track in the end. His best time of the day of 1.24.374 minutes was a good 3 tenths below his own pole position lap on Saturday. The reason for this was less hidden in technology updates than in the external conditions. With cooler temperatures in the morning, the track offered significantly more grip than in qualifying.

Marcus Ericsson secured second place in the Sauber. The gap of 2.250 seconds was, however, considerable. Just behind me, Raffaelle Marciello landed another Sauber driver who, for once, was allowed to sit in the factory Ferrari at the start of the test. On Wednesday the Italian will get a direct comparison when the substitute driver goes back to the usual Sauber cockpit.

shows Renault steadfast

For Ferrari, the main thing was to properly test the aero package presented at the weekend. In addition to huge measuring grids, the engineers also tried to get to the bottom of the flow at the stern with FloViz paint. Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull was also used to collect aero data - but here the sensors were mounted on the new nose and the front wing.

The test day was also used to check the stability of the Renault engine to test. That worked quite well. With 101 laps, the Russian drove more than one Grand Prix distance. Junior driver Pierre Gasly in the Toro Rosso also rolled off a lot of kilometers. With 131 laps, the Frenchman even had the second best value of the day. Only Rosberg managed a little more with 146 laps. Gasly is allowed on WednesdayIncidentally, steer the Red Bull and can then make a direct comparison of the two Renault cars.

Wehrlein has to cancel the test

Actually, Pascal Wehrlein should be used at Force India. The Mercedes development driver and DTM driver had to cancel his test for health reasons. Instead, GP2 driver Nick Yelloly made his F1 debut on Tuesday. After all, the youngster set the sixth fastest time. Finally on Wednesday, Formula 3 champion Esteban Ocon will be able to show his talent in the Force India for the first time after his engagement as a Mercedes junior driver.

Felipe Massa only managed 54 laps in the Williams. There was no justification for the meager mileage. Allegedly you could pull through the whole program. In the end, the Brazilian was even trumped in the distance classification by McLaren test driver Oliver Turvey. In the time table, however, only the red lantern remained for the young Briton.
