F1 technology: The Ferrari trick with the DRS pedal

N Usually we present you aerodynamics at this point -Updates or mechanical modifications to the Formula 1 cars. For his first 3D animation after the summer break, our technology guru Giorgio Piola has come up with something very special. The Italian has discovered the Ferrari DRS trick.

Foot pedal for DRS activation

In contrast to most other teams, where the DRS is activated via a button on the steering wheel Ferrari has installed a third pedal in the footwell. If the driver takes off the brake, he can press a small button with his left foot that flattens the rear wing.

Since the DRS zones are usually only on straights or in acceleration passages, the pilot has the Brake foot free anyway. The great advantage of a button on the steering wheel only comes into play when the DRS is deactivated again during the braking phase.

As soon as the driver leaves the foot switch, the rear wing closes again. In the millisecond it takes for the foot to switch from one pedal to the other, the air rests against the rear wing and produces downforce. The car is thus directly stable in the rear when braking.

Small disadvantages with alternative DRS deactivation

Without the additional pedal, the driver has two options for deactivating the system. With a button on the steering wheel, the change between closed DRS and braking takes a bit longer because there are two separate movements. With the additional pedal, the driver can also firmly grip the steering wheel with both hands, which is an important advantage in a restless car when braking or turning into a curve.

The pilot can theoretically do without the button entirely. The DRS would also close automatically if the driver simply pressed the brake pedal. However, at the beginning of the braking maneuver, there is not yet full downforce in the rear, as the current always needs a fraction of a second to properly flow around the wing profile.
