D as timed practice for the Italian GP was very special for two reasons: On the one hand, it developed into a crime thriller. While Lewis Hamilton set the pace for him in the first attempt in Q3, it was suddenly Kimi Raikkonen in the second attempt. In both cases the men at the top changed within a few moments. Sebastian Vettel also stumbled upon it. Because he initially assumed that he had secured pole position.

Tifosi freak out

On the other hand, the result with two Ferraris on the front row is of course a blockbuster, because it is the home race of the Scuderia. The already passionate fans freaked out in the stands. You could hardly have given them a much bigger gift.

Especially since Raikkonen had to wait since the Monaco GP in 2017 before he could enjoy this treat again. The joy about the pole position was not necessarily to be seen in Kimi's typical manner. For the photo of the first three, of course, he posed with sunglasses. At least there was a brief hug with his wife Minttu.

Kevin Magnussen and Fernando Alonso got in each other's way.

Smoke at Magnussen and Alonso

At Mercedes, on the other hand, the corners of the mouth hung down. You just can't figure out how Ferrari manages to be so much better on the straight. Valtteri Bottas not only missed the clock, he also narrowly escaped a crash in the pit lane. He slipped on a puddle with the Mercedes W09, so that it spun, but luckily it didn't hit anywhere.

Need even more thrills? Then we have the duel between the two stubborn KevinMagnussen and Fernando Alonso to offer. They dueled each other wheel to wheel in the first chicane.

In our picture gallery we show you the highlights from qualifying in Monza.
