D he made weather forecasts do not expect anything good for training Friday (8/24/2018). And when dark clouds moved over the Ardennes in the morning, only the greatest optimists believed that the track in Spa-Francorchamps would be spared from showers. But the crazy Belgium weather once again proved its unpredictability. It actually stayed dry.

And so the pilots were able to start the preparation program for the race in the first free practice and collect valuable data. Sebastian Vettel got off to a particularly good start. For the first time this season, the Heppenheimer secured a best training time on Friday. That means we can expect a lot for the rest of the weekend.

Genoa sticker on the Ferrari

Mercedes was on the road with new rims on the rear axle.

However, there was no great cheer in the Ferrari garage. The Italians are still thinking about the terrible bridge collapse in Genoa, in which 43 people were killed during the summer break. With a special sticker on their nose, the Scuderia paid tribute to the victims on the spa weekend.

In the first training session after the holidays, technology fans in particular got their money's worth. Mercedes tried out the new rims on the rear axle and the new front wing for the first time. As with Renault, Ferrari, Williams and Force India, the drivers tried out different rear wing variants during the session.

New helmets for Verstappen and Vandoorne

Red Bull was the first to have the new exterior mirrors on the road in Ferrari design. The ultra-flat wings on the front and back of the Red Bull were also more accurateWorth a look. At Renault, the engineers carried out special tests on the front wing. And fans of unusual helmet designs also got their money's worth. The two local heroes, Stoffel Vandoorne and Max Verstappen, were out and about with redesigned helmets.

In the gallery we show you the highlights of the Friday training session in Spa-Francorchamps.
