D as qualifying peaked as predicted towards the duel between Mercedes and Ferrari. It ended with a victory for silver over red, Lewis Hamilton over Sebastian Vettel. The two protagonists of the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship fought a gripping duel. Hamilton won it by 93 thousandths of a second.
For the five-time champion, it is the third pole position in Brazil after 2012 and 2016. Hamilton was only able to win once on the Interlagos circuit. That should change to the taste of the British on race Sunday. But it could have turned out quite differently if Sergey Sirotkin hadn't been able to evade the silver car with starting number 44 in Q2.

Vettel lost the direct duel , but kept his second place on the grid. Which equates to a small win. The FIA sued the Heppenheimer after he had battered the measuring scale in the second qualifying part. The stewards forbearance, imposed a fine of 25,000 euros and also issued a warning.
The incident happened in a hectic pace. Vettel wanted to switch from Supersoft to soft tires as soon as possible so that he could set a lap time on the yellow stickers before the impending rain. Ferrari gambled, and Vettel feared that the measurement process would cost him the climb to the third qualifying part - and thus the pole position.
In the last few minutes, the audience got to see the big show of the world champions . Valtteri Bottas was sticking to their heels but had to put up with third place. It was enough to be the fastest Finn of the day. Charles Leclerc spun twice, but together with his team-mate Marcus Ericsson made sure that Sauber celebrated the best qualifying result of the year.
