D he last appearance of the Silver Arrows dates from 11. September 1955. Then the curtain fell in Stuttgart. 55 years later, Mercedes returns to Formula 1 as a works team with a large line-up. With master maker Ross Brawn at the control desk, with Michael Schumacher as superstar, with Petronas as the main sponsor. Nico Rosberg and Nick Heidfeld complete the German national team, whose products are built in England. The car in Brackley, the engine in Brixworth.

Brawn GP became Mercedes GP

Previously Mercedes GP still Brawn GP, the world championship team of the 2009 season. That is why many assume that the 2010 World Cup will be there again have to be. The expectations are extremely high. No question about it, with Michael Schumacher and Ross Brawn you are certainly well equipped, but the Silver Arrows were not yet in title form during the test drives. On the third day of testing in Barcelona, Nico Rosberg turned the fastest lap in 1: 20.686 minutes, but Lewis Hamilton's McLaren weekly best was two tenths of a second short.

Super brain Ross Brawn is not very worried. 'We have our complete upgrade package for the first race in Bahrain. That should bring us further forward,' he says confidently. A new underbody is to come, and a new front wing is also on the plan. Mercedes sports director Norbert Haug is still stacks deep. 'When I assess our competitiveness for the first races, I think that we are not quite where we want to be yet.'

Nico Rosberg will first have to establish himself

It won't be the engine, because it is considered to be the most powerful in the whole field. This time, however, the design team had no time advantage over the competition. 'Despite the World Cup duel with Red Bull, we only sacrificed a week of development for the new car for the old one,' reveals Brawn. The new MGP W01 has a deep nose and is surprisingly short compared to the competition. The airbox is extremely flat. The reliability is already good. At the beginning of the test there were only problems with the tires.

The driver pairing Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher is a good mix that is explosive. Rosberg will first have to assert himself, because already now the media almost exclusively pounces on Schumacher. On the other handthis could also be an advantage for Rosberg, who can thus concentrate more on the essentials. Nick Heidfeld will play a subordinate role as test and substitute driver.

Forecast: With the engagement of Michael Schumacher, Mercedes has definitely succeeded in a PR coup, but that is guaranteed for a long time no successes. The expectations are extremely high. The test drives showed that the Silver Arrows have to fight for a place in the top quartet despite the top-class staff. It will be exciting to see how big the effects of the aero package Mercedes will bring to Bahrain.
