Formula 1 is still working on the cars from 2017. In the middle of the year, Red Bull's concept had prevailed. auto motor und sport readers already know it (see gallery). But then there was a new order. Overtaking has to become easier. On Tuesday (August 18, 2015), the designers were supposed to make suggestions as to how the cars could be less prone to turbulence.

New data on the 2017 Formula 1 car

However, the meeting ran a little different than expected. It was mainly about how to best achieve the set goal of faster lap times without getting too fast. An average of 5 seconds was envisaged.

Pirelli had found on the basis of simulations that half of the target could be achieved with wider tires. The Italian tire manufacturer suggested the following dimensions: 325 millimeters at the front, 425 millimeters at the rear. This deviates from the Red Bull concept on the rear axle, which provided for 450 millimeters.

Front wing narrower and lower

The FIA ​​study was sent to all teams the evening after the meeting. The teams now have time to think about it before the Japanese GP. The next meeting of the technical directors is to take place in the week after Suzuka. It was rumored that Bernie Ecclestone had also made a proposal. But it still has to be checked.

The front wing should not be 185 but only 170 centimeters wide and be a little closer to the road. This has the advantage that the air is easier to direct around the front tires. As in the past, on the inside of the wheels and not on the outside as in current cars.

The air vortices produced by the front wing also play a role in thislesser role. And, accordingly, can be disturbed less. In addition, the baffles in front of the side pods should disappear completely. Also with the ulterior motive to prevent the complicated game with intentionally generated vortices.

The step in the sub-floor is halved

As before, the rear wing should remain at a height of 95 centimeters and not be lowered to 80 centimeters as planned by Red Bull. The bottom plate should disappear. At the same time, the step in the sub-floor will be halved. From 5 to 2.5 centimeters.

That brings a weight saving of 11 kilograms. And the cars can go a millimeter lower. This in turn means an increase in contact pressure without increasing air resistance. So more downforce over the ground. And thus less susceptibility to traffic.

Ultimately, a maximum dimension should apply to the area (not the width) of the floor slab. This should encourage the engineers to think of different shapes in the area between the wheels. It will then no longer be possible to hold the base plate over the entire length from the beginning of the side pods to the rear wheels at the maximum permitted width of 180 centimeters.

At some point and somewhere, the base plate must be pulled in to to meet the requirement of the maximum permitted area. That could lead to very different side boxes. And thus to greater differentiation. Exactly what the fans want.
