E r has repeatedly emphasized that he will return to Formula 1 want. Now Heikki Kovalainen has taken at least one step in this direction. Caterham announced ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix that the Finn would get a chance in first practice in Bahrain and Barcelona. The 31-year-old should bring his experience primarily to the further development of the Caterham CT03.

'He has six years of Formula 1 experience, so he can give us objective feedback on the various configurations, that we will test ', justifies Caterham team boss Cyril Abiteboul the decision. 'He can also compare the 2013 generation tires with those from the previous year. It would be a waste if we didn't use Heikki's expertise after three years together.' In addition to the technical support, Kovalainen will also be at the side of Formula 1 newcomer van der Garde and the still quite inexperienced Pic.

Chance of a regular cockpit for Kovalainen?

' Of course, that's great news that I'm back on track in Bahrain and Spain, 'said Kovalainen of his new job. 'I'm looking forward to returning and helping the team as much as possible. I feel fit and know that my experience can give the team new ideas and directions in terms of setup and strategy.'

Officially, the team's former regular driver, who had to vacate the cockpit at the end of 2012 due to his low dowry compared to Pic and van der Garde, is of course only a test driver. It is rumored, however, whether this obligation for Kovalainen could also open the door to a new cockpit.
