L was rumored, now it is finally perfect. The driver search at Williams is over. On Tuesday (16.1.) Bruno Senna was officially introduced as the second regular pilot alongside Pastor Maldonado. The Brazilian is replacing his compatriot Rubens Barrichello, whose career in Formula 1 is about to end after 19 years.

Bruno Senna was still under contract with Lotus Renault last season, where he was Nick Heidfeld was allowed to represent from the race in Belgium. 18 years after the death of his famous uncle Ayrton (1994), a driver named Senna will be sitting in a Williams Renault again.

'It will be very interesting to drive for a team, for that one too my uncle drove, 'commented Senna on signing the contract. 'Some people here still worked with him. Hopefully we can bring some memories back to life and create some good new ones.' The delay in the announcement was allegedly due to the long time it took the racing team to assess the performance of the 28-year-old.

Williams downhill

Williams wants to finally write positive headlines again in 2012. With only five championship points and the disappointing ninth place ten in the constructors' cup, the sporting goals were clearly missed. Even financially, the traditional team is not a bed of roses. The racing team, which went public in 2011, lost around a quarter of its value within a year.

In addition, there was the loss of title sponsor at & t and the quarrels over Pastor Maldonado's Venezuelan dowry. With Bruno Senna you now seem to be better positioned, at least financially. We hear from Brazil that the sponsors of the Paulista are bringing in a double-digit million amount.

'I want to repay the support from my home country with good results. This support has helped me to be in this position now. I'm proud to be a Brazilian and even more motivated than ever. I've wanted nothing else since I started karting. '

Senna better than Sutil and Barrichello?

It remains to be seen whether Senna is the right choice in terms of sport. At his two previous positions in Formula 1 - Hispania and Lotus Renault - the GP2 runner-up from 2008 was not yet able to take the spotlight.

Expertsdoubt that the inexperienced Senna can get the team back on the road to success. The experienced Rubens Barrichello or the fast Adrian Sutil, who had also long speculated on the Williams cockpit, were much more popular with Formula 1 experts. Immediately after the announcement, Barrichello sent congratulations via Twitter: 'I won't drive the Williams and I wish my friend Bruno Senna all the best. My future remains open.'

The suspicion arises that Williams once again monetary factors were the deciding factor in driver choice. Already after the 2010 season Nico H├╝lkenberg had to vacate his cockpit despite good performances for Maldonado.

Williams is looking forward to Talent Senna

Team boss Frank Williams, on the other hand, pulls the sporting achievements into the Foreground: 'The circumstances of his two Formula 1 years did not give him the ideal opportunity to show consistent performance. It was therefore important that we spend a lot of time with him to find out more about his potential.'

'That happened both on the racetrack and in the simulator. He has proven that he is fast, has a technical understanding and is very willing to learn. We look forward to seeing this talent in our car.'

Sutil and Barrichello have to tremble

With the commitment of Bruno Senna, only one official place in Formula 1 is now free. Hispania has not signed a second driver besides Pedro de la Rosa. However, Jarno Trulli's chair also wobbles. In addition to Rubens Barrichello, Vitaly Petrov and Adrian Sutil are also hoping for the cockpit at Caterham.
