S rocking feeling for Sebastian Vettel: In the morning the Heppenheimer rolled in his Ferrari after a defective drive shaft after just over 20 years Minutes. The bottom line was that this made last place. In the second free practice session, the four-time world champion turned the table upside down.

Vettel first with the fastest time, then with transmission problems

In 1: 09.600 minutes, Vettel snapped the fastest time in the afternoon. He stayed slightly above the Friday record of Lewis Hamilton from the previous year, which stood at 1: 09.542 minutes. Vettel was still haunted by the technical bad luck. 25 minutes before the end of the race, his race engineer reported over the radio that the transmission in the Ferrari SF15-T was no longer working properly. Then Vettel had to cancel his endurance run and headed for the pit. So he lacks important experience for the race.

With only 11 thousandths behind, Nico Rosberg finished second in the afternoon. In the morning, the Mercedes driver had set the fastest lap on the 4.326 kilometer circuit in Styria. However, according to experience, Mercedes has a little more fuel on board than Ferrari on Friday. Or just let his driver off the leash with the handbrake on. We will probably not experience the real strength of the Silver Arrows until Saturday in qualifying.

Kimi Räikkönen finished the day in third place and underlined the good Ferrari performance. He was 0.260 seconds behind. It was very close in the field anyway. The top 10 separated by less than a second after 90 minutes.

McLaren unpacks the new short nose

Surprise man in the second free practice was Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelan and winner of the Spanish GP in 2012 was only 0.314 seconds behind the top in fourth position. Even ahead of Lewis Hamilton, who set his fastest time of 1: 10.137 minutes but on the soft mix and not the supersofts. There was a simple reason. The defending champion couldn't get a clean lap on the extra soft stickers. The world champion often lost his way in the afternoon. Turns one and eight are particularly tricky for the pilots. But the final hairpin bothered them too.

Le Mans winner Nico Hülkenberg came in sixth. Romain Grosjean (Lotus) and Max Verstappen (Toro Rosso) followed. Felipe completed the top 10Nasr in the Sauber and Sergio Perez in the second Force India. Six drivers out of the top ten were thus driven by a Mercedes V6.

Nothing has worked together at Red Bull so far. As in Canada, Daniil Kvyat (12th) was in better shape than Daniel Ricciardo (17th) .). But the result remains unsatisfactory. In the back third were the Williams, who, however, drive with full tanks on Friday as usual.

McLaren-Honda unpacked its short nose on Friday afternoon. This changes the rest of the car as well. Except for the side pods, everything should be new. However, Fernando Alonso did not reach more than 16th place. Team mate Jenson Button did not benefit from the new specification and was 18th before the Manor-Marussia.
