Fernando Alonso on Ferrari farewell
Subscriptions & booklets

F errari has finished the egg dance. Sebastian Vettel comes. The German signed a three-year contract. Fernando Alonso has to go. After 5 years the marriage ended prematurely. Alonso announced two years ago that he wanted to end his career with the Reds. But the relationship with his employer had cooled significantly in the last few years.

A worthy farewell to Alonso

The racing team from Maranello tried to make the end as worthy as possible. Although everything had long been clear with Vettel, they wanted to show Alonso respect with the late announcement. It shouldn't look like being kicked out. There were also a few nice words to say goodbye. 'Fernando Alonso will always have a special place in the venerable list of great Ferrari drivers', explained team principal Marco Mattiacci.

'We offer him our heartfelt thanks for the extraordinary adventure with the Scuderia In the last 5 years he has been very close to winning the title twice. I am sure that a great driver like Fernando will always keep the jumping horse in his heart and I also expect that the Ferrari fans will continue to show him their respect. '

Fernando Alonso is leaving the Ferrari family

There is no resentment from Alonso either: 'Today is not an easy day for me, because even if I look to the future with great enthusiasm, my journey as a Ferrari driver ends at the end of the season. It was not an easy decision but I thought it over very carefully. My love for Ferrari was always a priority. Fortunately, I have always been able to make my own decisions about the future. These I also have the option now. I thank the team for understanding my situation. '

' I am leaving Ferrari after 5 years in which I have delivered my best. The big challenges pushed me to new limits. I have proven that I am a real team player and that I put Ferrari's interests before my own. I am very proud of what we have achieved together. The past 5 years have produced some of the best moments of my career. I also have the feeling that when I say goodbye, I'm leaving behind a family and not just friends. '

The decision to leave Ferrari was made in September.' But I didalready thought about it last year. Then came the big reform of the rules with the new turbo engines and I stayed for another year. Now was the time to start something new. I sat down with the president and told him I wanted to go. I have to thank Ferrari. You could also have said no. '

Alonso will probably move to McLaren in 2015. The contract should not be signed yet. But since the two-time world champion has no alternative, it cannot be long. McLaren had already declared before Abu Dhabi that no drivers will be announced for 2015 before December 1st, when asked about his future, Alonso only said: 'Time will tell whether it was the right decision.'
