Mateschitz had met with Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne in the last few days. He had no good news for the soft drink tsar. Red Bull and ToroRosso can have Ferrari engines, but only the 2015 version. Technical director James Allison has thus prevailed with his arguments. He warned the team management of the consequences should the engine department be forced to supply all customers with the 2016 engines. That could inhibit engine development and set Ferrari back in the race with Mercedes.

Will Red Bull swallow the toad or stop?

Marchionne let the Red Bull boss know that it was on this point there is no longer any room for negotiation. What Mateschitz has the choice: Either swallow the toad or stop. Between the lines, the man who owns two Formula 1 teams suggests that an exit is the more likely scenario. The decision should be made at the end of October. 'I think it's good that Dietrich has set a deadline,' Ricciardo explains on Thursday (October 8, 2015) in Sochi. 'We finally have to know what we can do. We can't wait until Christmas to design the car.'

Why does Mateschitz give himself so much time to think? The facts are on the table. He might as well pull the plug tomorrow. There can only be one reason for the three weeks deadline. It's a warning shot, an ultimatum and a wake-up call to the decision-makers in Formula 1. To Ferrari and Mercedes, to Bernie Ecclestone, to FIA President Jean Todt, combined with the question: Do you really want two healthy teams to disappear? And the order: come up with a solution.

The Red Bull boss may be hoping that the Mercedes Board of Management can be softened after all. Doesn't he have to ask himself: What good are the beautiful victories if the sport is ridiculous and loses two teams? Mercedes is currently doing everything to keep its opponents happy. They agree to expand engine development, thoughit goes against your own interests. Renault is offered a cooperation. The rear light Manor is supplied with engines. What would be gained if you let Red Bull die?

Failure forces FIA to rethink

Mateschitz plays with Mercedes' concern that the beautiful Formula 1 platform could be damaged if it loses two teams. And the fear of rights holders who fear for the value of their shares. It would collapse like that of Volkswagen after the diesel scandal became known.

With his hidden threat, Mateschitz also wants to force the FIA ​​to rethink. The engine format has failed when engine manufacturers can determine who gets good and who gets less good engines. Apparently that is also clear to Jean Todt. You can hear that the FIA ​​president is thinking about modifying the engine format for the first time without giving up the efficiency formula. The Gordian knot can only be undone when the technology is manageable again for everyone and the differences between good and bad engines are no longer as great as they are at the moment. That could persuade Red Bull to continue, even at the price that they would have to drive 2015 Ferrari engines in 2016.

And what does Ricciardo think about a possible 2015 engine? 'It all depends on how good Ferrari's specification would be for 2016. But if we were only 20 hp behind the competition, it would be a lot better than this year.' The Australian doesn't have a plan B yet: 'I'm still thinking positively at the moment and hope that we will get something decent. If it gets dark at the end of October, I'll keep my eyes and ears open.' Despite the misery, Ricciardo is still joking. 'I checked out a few properties in Las Vegas. So I might buy or rent something when I'm not racing. But fun: I'm still too young to sit on the couch.'
