D he goal is demanding: Toyota wants to be worldwide of the next generation Prius will sell 30,000 units a month. For comparison: VW sold around 36,000 Golf VII cars a month worldwide - of all engine variants without hybrid. There was nothing like that in the Golf back then.

With the new Prius, the customers targeted by Toyota get a car that has essentially remained true to its character, even in the third generation, even if the drive unit is to it Progress is no longer emphasized with such a strong sing-song as in the past.

New battery in the Toyota Prius IV

The hybrid system in combination with the newly developed nickel-metal-hydride battery is lighter, reduced in installation space (around 30 percent) and more efficient (around 20 percent) than in the past. The efficiency of the gasoline engine in the Toyota Prius III is said to have improved by up to 40 percent. In combination with the electric motor, it only produces 122 hp instead of the previous 136 hp and needs two tenths more from zero to 100 km /h in 10.6 seconds than in the past - which shouldn't worry Prius fans.

On the other hand, it is more astonishing that Toyota is still sticking to the nickel-metal hybrid battery. Prius chief developer Koji Toyoshima: “We have a long experience in dealing with nickel-metal-hydride batteries. We know them very well. And there are still situations in which the lithium-ion battery is not so easy to control. ”That is why it is only used in individual markets, but not in Germany for the time being. Since the plug-in version has not sold well so far, there will be no immediate successor for it. Toyota wants to work on increasing the all-electric range to 30 kilometers first. A four-wheel drive variant will be launched in Japan in December and will later also come to Europe.

Toyota Prius IV on new platform

The Prius is the first representative of a new platform at Toyota, which is called NGA for New Global Architecture. The rigidity is said to have been improved by 60 percent, and a double wishbone construction is now used on the rear axle. With the model change, the Toyota grows by 60 millimeters to 4.54 meters, the wheelbase remains unchanged. The trunk volume increases by 56 liters to 502Liters, because the battery has recently found space under the rear seat of the passengers.

First impression of the new generation: The car has become more agile in handling and feels more comfortable on the road. No wonder, the Toyota has become 15 millimeters wider in the track and the height has been reduced by 20 millimeters. The rear spoiler is even 55 millimeters lower than in the past. The comfortable seats in the front and good headroom in the rear are striking. At first glance, the interior looks very simple with its materials - let's wait and see how the European version will be presented to us in February.

First personal conclusion

The Prius also deserves a chance in its new edition. He is a lovable companion of hybrid technology, even if the competition has caught up a lot - and he himself has rough edges. I would like it to be a plug-in hybrid, because only then does the system make sense for me in city traffic. I don't need all-wheel drive, however.
