S since its market launch in 1996, the Skoda Octavia has been selling almost as if by itself. The fourth generation is taking a big step both visually and technically. Above all, the significantly new design makes the generation change visible: Skoda has optically modified the four-eye face. On request, full LED matrix headlights ensure constant high beam travel without dazzling oncoming traffic or other road users. The broad, chrome-plated grille moves a little further down, the headlights are given an angular shape with LED daytime running lights below, the bars between the individual light elements are narrower.

The dimensions, however, are almost the same. The new Skoda Octavia is 4,689 millimeters long (+22 millimeters), 1,829 millimeters wide (+15 millimeters) and 1,468 millimeters high (-27 millimeters). The sedan has the same external dimensions. The wheelbase has remained exactly the same for both at 2,686 millimeters. The knee room for the rear passengers has increased by a further five millimeters to 78 millimeters.

Practical little helpers everywhere in the car

The bonnet, with a total of six beads, has a more dynamic design, just like the Golf little snub-nosed. The big difference at this point: In Generation 8, a rod keeps the hood open on the Golf - and two dampers on the Octavia. And when the hood is open, one of the Simply Clever solutions is immediately apparent: the lid of the mop wash water can be transformed into a convenient filling funnel with one handle. Simply Clever solutions known from other series can still be found in the two front doors in the form of umbrellas and optionally also a hand brush, the fuel filler flap (ice scraper) and in the trunk (four bag holder hooks). An AdBlue comfort filler neck and (as in the Golf) storage pockets on the backrests of the front seats are new.

The 640 liter luggage compartment of the new generation is 30 liters larger than its predecessor (the sedan has a capacity of 600 Liters ten liters more than before). If the rear seat backrest, which is split in a 60:40 ratio, is completely folded down, there are only 1,700 instead of 1,740 liters available for loading. The reason is the slightly more coupé-like shape of the roof, thanks to the new LED rear lights, which make the rear end appear much more dynamic. The flap opens and closes electrically - at least on the Combi.

This is what the Skoda Octavia looks like as a Combi.

For the first time at Skoda The new safety systems, evasion assistant, turning assistant, exit warning and a local danger warning are used. The Area View System, Side Assist and the predictive adaptive distance assistant are also new. Together with the traffic sign recognition, the lane departure warning system, the traffic jam assistant and the emergency assist, the system forms the travel assist. Unlike the VW Golf, the redesigned instrument panel is not only available in a purely digital version, but also in an analog version. The large, free-standing central infotainment display is available in 8.25 or 10 inches. Below the screen there is a touch-sensitive bar that is used to set both the temperature and the volume of the infotainment system.

A new control module with a small one replaces the DSG selector lever in the center console Rocker for selecting the speed levels and a button for parking mode.

The lower area is followed by the new center console, which is characterized by a clear design. The direct selection buttons for important vehicle functions such as driving mode select or the parking assistant are downmoved up under the central display. The center console and the door panels with door handles in a new design are adorned with chrome elements. The panels on the front doors are now partially perforated, the control button for the electrically adjustable exterior mirrors is on the armrest right next to the buttons for the electrically operated windows.

The new one, manually adjustable in height and depth using a lever The steering wheel has two spokes and can optionally be heated. In the variant with multifunction, the control buttons are completely rearranged. A total of 14 different functions can be carried out using the buttons and wheels, including, for the first time, the activation of the optional steering wheel heating and the operation of Travel Assist. A three-spoke multifunction leather steering wheel is also available on request. In addition to two USB-C sockets in the center console, another one is available for use at the top of the headliner (for example for dash cams). Wide range of engines

That he has the modular transverse construction kit (MQB) with his famous Group brother VW Golf shares, gives Octavia customers the agony of choice between many drive variants. A 1.0 liter TSI with 110 hp and a 1.5 TSI with 150 hp - each with a manual six-speed gearbox - as well as a 2.0-liter, 190 hp TSI unit with seven-speed DSG and all-wheel drive are available as petrol engines Choice.

The new Octavia is the first Skoda to use shift-by-wire technology to operate the DSG. This electronically transmits the driver's gear selection to the transmission. The DSG selector lever in the center console is replaced by a new operating module with a small rocker switch for selecting the drive levels and a button for parking mode.

Natural gas drive and plug-in hybrids at the start

The diesel range is only clearer at first glance, as only a 2.0-liter displacement version is available here. However, it is divided into three power levels with 115, 150 and 200 hp. The 115 PS version is available with a manual switch or DSG, the 150 PS version with a manual switch, DSG and DSG all-wheel drive, the 200 PS version is only available with a DSG all-wheel drive. A 1.5 liter, 130 PS TSI G-TEC, i.e. natural gas drive, with manual switch or DSG rounds off the pure combustion range.

There are also two eTEC variants with mild hybrid technology ready. They have a seven-speed DSG and a 1.0-liter, 110-hp three-cylinder, or a 1.5-liter, 150-hp four-cylinder. A 48-V belt starter generator and a 48-V lithium-ion battery are used in both models.

For the first time, the Octavia comes as an iV with a plug-in hybrid drive. A 1.4 liter TSI petrol engine with 156 hp and a 75 kW electric motor ensure a system output of 204 hp. OneSix-speed dual-clutch transmission delivers the power of the two hearts to the front wheels. The purely electric range should be up to 55 kilometers.
