Parallel to the n e new Mercedes-AMG A 45 the top model of the Mercedes CLA is also coming onto the market. Like the hatchback model, the four-door will be available in two output levels. The S version has 421 hp and 500 Nm of torque, the basic version has 387 hp and develops a maximum torque of 480 Newton meters. In addition to the drive power, the S models are even more consistently designed for performance: the brake system is larger, 19-inch wheels and a sports steering wheel with 12 o'clock marking are standard.

Like the predecessor the new CLA 45 is also powered by a four-cylinder turbo with a displacement of two liters. AMG completely redeveloped the engine and rotated the installation position by 180 degrees. The turbocharger and the exhaust manifold are now positioned on the bulkhead to the interior, and the intake system is positioned at the front. Among other things, this should improve the airflow. AMG also promises optimized response behavior that should come very close to that of a naturally aspirated engine. The engine is still coupled to a dual clutch transmission - but now with eight instead of seven gears. As before, all-wheel drive is standard, which now distributes the drive power between the two rear wheels in a wheel-selective manner. Among other things, this enables the use of a drift mode for controlled oversteer.

In addition to the drive, the CLA 45 naturally also shares all other technical components with its A-Class brother. The revised chassis can be upgraded with adaptive dampers for an extra charge, which can be set in three modes from comfortably springy to sporty and hard. With AMG Dynamic Select, six driving modes (smoothness, comfort, sport, sport +, individual, race) are available to further adapt the vehicle characteristics as required.

a tad slower than the hatchback model

The differences between the two new AMG compacts are quickly ticked off: Since the basic CLA already has a wider front axle, the flared fenders are less than on the A 45. The CLA 45 also has a slightly modified front apron nozzle-shaped air inlets. In addition, the diffuser at the rear has four individual fins, compared to only two on the A 45. And with the AMG aerodynamics package, the four-door coupé has an enlarged spoiler lip in high-gloss black instead of the large rear wing. TheS models are each equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels. The A 45 S is 8.5 inches wide with 245/35 R 19 tires, the CLA 45 S is nine inches wide and fitted with 255/35 R 19 tires.

The Sprint The CLA 45 S should go from zero to 100 km /h in 4.0 seconds. The hatchback model is a tenth faster at 3.9 seconds. The zero-to-one hundred value is 0.1 seconds higher in the CLA basic model. The top speed is electronically limited to 270 km /h in the S models and to 250 km /h in the basic variants. Only the optional AMG Driver’s Package loosens the reins and lets the CLA 45 run up to 270 km /h.

The manufacturer has not yet given any prices. The 381 PS strong predecessor last cost 57,209 euros, the new CLA 35 with 306 PS costs at least 51,705 euros.
