M ith the A 35, Mercedes has been offering an AMG A-Class model for several months. It makes 306 hp and therefore poached in the area of the Golf R, Audi S3 or BMW M140i. Now the manufacturer is adding the new top model A 45.
While the basic design of the two-liter turbo engine of the A 35 comes from the civilian series brothers A 220 and A250, the new A 45 is getting back a real Affalterbach heart true to the “one man, one engine” tradition. In two available power levels. Even the basic A 45 model with 387 hp and 480 Nm exceeds the performance data of its predecessor (381 hp, 475 Nm). With the S model, AMG goes even further: 421 hp and 500 Nm maximum torque. The A 45 S thus more than significantly breaks the 400 hp mark, which has not yet been reached in series hot hatches.
With the newly developed engine, Mercedes-AMG wants the world's most powerful four-cylinder turbo engine in one Have built a large-scale model. About the other special features of the engine, such as the changed installation position, the particularly high maximum boost pressure of 2.1 bar, the naturally aspirated power delivery and all technical data we have already reported here .
Driving values of a real sports car
The A 45 also advances into new dimensions when it comes to acceleration. In the predecessor, the zero-to-one hundred sprint took at least 4.2 seconds, according to the factory. The new A 45 S should manage the standard sprint in 3.9 seconds, the manufacturer's information for the base model is only a tenth of a second slower. The differences in the top speed are more serious: the S-model is only limited to 270 km /h, in the basic model the factory setting is 250 km /h. If you want to drive faster, you can order the optional AMG Driver's Package.
In order to achieve the maximum possible acceleration values from a standing start, the standard eight-speed dual clutch transmission (AMG Speedshift) is equipped with a Race Start function. As usual, the all-wheel drive delivers maximum traction. For more agility and higher cornering speeds, it is also equipped with a new rear axle drive, so that the drive force is not only distributed between the front and rear wheels, but also between the left and right rear wheels on a selective basis. This also makes the drift mode introduced in the current AMG E 63 possible, namely controlled oversteerallows. It is standard on the S models and available as part of the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package for the basic version.
In the basic model, brake discs measuring 350 x 34 millimeters with 4-piston fixed calipers are responsible for the deceleration on the front axle and 330 x 22 millimeter brake discs with 1-piston calipers on the rear axle. AMG has given the S models 360 x 36 millimeter brake discs with 6-piston fixed calipers on the front axle. In both models, the discs are internally ventilated and perforated.
More agile, but also more comfortable
The revised chassis with McPherson construction on the front axle and a four-link rear axle is equipped with new, Equipped with frequency-selective shock absorbers and should therefore guarantee more stable straight-line stability and less tendency to roll while at the same time increasing comfort compared to its predecessor. With the three modes of the adaptive damping adjustment (option), the driver can also influence the response behavior of the dampers - between comfort-oriented to sporty and hard. Sport, Sport +, Individual, Race) and thus further setting options for the vehicle characteristics are available. Thus, among other things, the accelerator pedal characteristic, switching times and times, steering characteristic, ESP or the exhaust system can be controlled and adapted to your own preferences.
More independent design
In terms of exterior design, the top model of the A-Class is now even more independent than before. The most striking feature is the wide radiator grille with the vertical struts as on the larger AMG models. The front axle and the front fenders are wider than in the civil A models. To increase the torsional rigidity, AMG screwed a lightweight aluminum panel behind the engine. There is also a strut brace between the front suspension struts and further diagonal braces on the underbody.
The aerodynamics package optionally includes additional attachments, such as the side flics or the larger rear wing. While the S model has 19-inch aluminum wheels as standard, these cost extra for the basic version (series: 18 inches).
In the interior, the two models differ in terms of the applications - base: red, S -Model: yellow. The A 45 S is equipped with a sports steering wheel including a 12 o'clock marker as standard. In the center console of both models there are additional switches for operating the 3-stage ESP, the adaptive chassis and the exhaust system. Another special feature are the three AMG-specific display styles in the digital instrument cluster. In “Supersport” mode, the rev counter is shown in the middle, the speedometer reaches up to 300 km /h. The A 35 is currently in the price list at 47,796 euros, the A 45 based on the previous generation cost 51,527 euros most recently.
